Brownfield Guard to intensify 62 recruiting drive

Brownfield National Guard unit Battery B of the 36th Infantry Division will expand its recruiting next year after federal rules on enlistment expired. Captain Fred T. Adams says openings exist for all qualified men, with or without prior service, and invites locals to visit the armory to learn benefits of Guards service.

Executive Director Burton Arrives at Brownfield Boys Club

Ralph E. Burton arrives as executive director of Brownfield Boys Club succeeding Leon Hatter. Burton, 24, from St. Charles Mo., was most recently program assistant at the St. Charles club and carries prior service in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. The club, chartered in 1960, is at 704 West Broadway with hours after school and Saturdays. Burton seeks a pool table donation and notes the board includes local pastors, business leaders, and Brownfield police chief James Tippit.

Petty Seeks Second Term as 98th District Rep

Levelland politician Olen R. Petty announced he will run for a second term as state representative of the 98th District pending the Democratic Primary on May 5. The district includes Terry, Hockley, Cochran and Yoakum counties. Petty planned a formal announcement soon while in Austin for the Legislature’s Third Special Session.

Chest Seeks Civic Club Aid To Close Campaign

The Terry County Community Chest seeks Brownfield civic club assistance to finish this year's drive. Total gifts amount to 22 927 toward 31 125 with 8 198 still needed. Nine agencies share funds, including American Red Cross Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Salvation Army and more.

Terry committee formed to fight screwworm pest

A Terry County group led by chairman Robert Beasley and county agent Jim Foy forms a committee to back the Southwest Animal Health Research Foundation. Members include Dr T G Faulkenberry and George Steele with teachers Bowing in support. The program seeks funds at 50 cents per head for adult cattle and 10 cents per head for smaller livestock to curb the screwworm, seen as saving far more than the cost of control.

County Judge Seeks First Full Term in Terry County

County Judge Raymond A. Simms announced Wednesday he will seek his first full term, subject to the Democratic Primary on May 5. He has served the unexpired term of Herbert Chesshir and notes progress in hospital finances and management. Simms invites public comment on his work in the County Court Probate Court Juvenile Court and Commissioner's Court.

Large highway contract awarded to Lubbock firm for Terry Gaines district

A contract for 18.8 miles of highway work in Terry and Gaines counties, including State Highway 137, FM 1939, and U.S. 63 385, has been awarded to Henry L. Stafford Construction Co. of Lubbock for 519 902 dollars. Work starts January 22 and will last about 180 days with traffic safety measures and police supervision in place.

Civil Defense Session Set in Lubbock

Free copies of the civil defense booklet What To Know and Do About Nuclear Attack are available at Brownfield Post Office. A West Texas fallout shelters survey will start soon in Brownfield before January end, with a 1:30 p.m. area meeting at the Municipal Garden Club Building in Lubbock to discuss the survey. Attendees include local civil defense officials, Brownfield leaders, county commissioners and city councilmen, plus others invited to join the Army Corps of Engineers project.
