The Feb. 1 implementation of the federal wage hour law affects 1.5 million more workers in retail service, restaurants, hotels, and motels. Minimum wage rises to 1.30 and overtime rules tighten 40 hour workweeks. nursing and residential care hold 48 hours. Local concerns cite hospital payrolls rising about 22,000 yearly and potential lunchroom closures due to cafeteria raises.
Terry Memorial Hospital District board members rejected a referendum to elect a site vote between Park Site and Flache Site. President Robert Baumgardner announced progress with the Flache Site, Hill Burton plans, and acquisition of adjacent lots. Employees gain Feb. 1 wage increases under federal minimums. four directors to be elected April 6 with petitions due March 11.
Greg Chapman installed as Master Councilor of Wayland Parker Chapter DeMolay at Masonic Hall. Shad Brooks senior councilor Kenny Pair junior councilor. Tommy Jones area master councilor served as installing officer with Bobby Craig Jimon Craig Gary Paddack assisting. Other officers named include Donald Jones Karl Baunzardner Billy Blankenship Winn Moore Wayne DuBose Gary Bacchus Ricky Wagner Quin Skains Lynn Tatum. Flower Talk by Bruce Roberts for Lynn Tatum and Bill Gray. Greg Chapman paid tribute to parents Mr and Mrs F W Chapman.
The Lions Club announces the Talent Tournament will be held February 13 and 14 at Brownfield High School Auditorium. Registration blanks are at Brownfield State Bank and Trust. Rehearsals are February 11. tickets cost 1 dollar for adults and 50 cents for students.
Brownfield post office and city officials authorize a $ federal funded project to widen the entrance to 25 feet and reduce the island to six feet. Construction starts Monday by Doss and Jones Contractors with city crews removing old concrete. Patrons will use the east side parking for about two weeks and boxes relocate across from First National Bank lot.
Two Brownfield residents were honored at Pioneer Natural Gas Company’s annual service award dinner in Lubbock. Charles R. Fulkerson received a 15 year pin and Andrew E. Richardson a 25 year award. Over 100 employees and wives attended, part of a three city series honoring 154 employees with 2,080 years of service. President C L Wall and VPs Whitis Watson Edquist Rainwater presided.
The Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agricultural banquet will be held at 7 30 p m Monday in the National Guard Armory with Dr Kenneth McFarland of Topeka Kansas as guest speaker Tickets can be bought at the Chamber office Brownfield State Bank and Trust Company and First National Bank The Outstanding Citizen of 1968 Award will be announced at the event with the winner kept secret until the banquet New officers for 1969 include Ray Anderson president Seigen vice president Hahn and Jackie Cargill executive committee Dennis Q Lilly comptroller George Weiss outgoing president Johnny Isaacs executive vice president New directors are W O Caraway Cargill Darwin Jack Greenfield Alvin King and Marion Snell Dr McFarland Educational Consultant for the American Trucking Associations Washington D C is a guest lecturer and consultant to major corporations.
Jackie Cargill led the Brownfield Optimist Club in the absence of former president Bob Burris who resigned to move to Dallas. A new president will be chosen after the nominating committee’s recommendation. Rev. Alby Cockrell gave an inspirational talk and two guests from the Boy Scouts of America were introduced. Dr. McFarland received the National Freedom Leadership Award at Valley Forge on February 22, 1968, honored by Freedoms Foundation President Kenneth Wells as the nation’s top public speaker. Leonard Ellington provided dinner piano music.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Rowena Pharris 74 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Crow officiating. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. She died at Brownfield General Hospital after a brief illness. Survivors include a son Robert and three daughters, plus siblings and grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1964.
The Brownfield chapter of the Women’s League will meet at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the Flame Room of Pioneer Natural Gas to finalize plans for a public meeting scheduled Jan 27 at Oak Grove Cafeteria and discuss event details.
