Seminole Chamber of Commerce plans its upcoming banquet with humorist Newt Hielscher of Shreveport as guest speaker. Dr Kenneth McFarland touted as top US speaker. banquet venue seats 750. Outstanding Citizen selection kept secret until the event. tickets urged for attendance.
Terry County Sheriff's Department reports December 1969 arrests totaling 69 with 64 in Terry County and five elsewhere. Civil papers: 12 served out of county for 37 dollars. 36 served in county for 49 dollars. Groceries for 336 prisoners cost 173.85 dollars. Department units traveled 12,752 miles for the month.
Funeral services for Mrs. Charles L. Wilks 30 will be at 10 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Bailey officiating. Burial in Terry County Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home. She died at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock after heart surgery in Houston in December and admission Saturday. A Jemison Alabama native, she moved to the Pool community in 1955 from Alabama. She werkte for General Telephone and was a Calvary Baptist member. Survivors include her husband a son Jackie three daughters Rebecca Lynn Helinda Kaye and Melinda Faye all at home five brothers James Arthur Posey Centerville Alabama J D Posey Montgomery Alabama L P Posey Chicago Illinois and Fred Posey Ft Knox Kentucky and one sister Mrs Bobbie Jean Battle Mims Florida.
Approximately 700 people are expected for the Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture banquet at 7 30 p m Monday in the National Guard Armory. George Weiss presides at his final meeting as outgoing president, to be succeeded by Ray Anderson. The event will feature the naming of the Outstanding Citizen of Terry County in 1968 by a committee led by Lloyd Hahn and including Charles Darwin and W A Dub Leigon.
Citizens of Terry County must register before the January 31 deadline. About 2700 residents had registered by 4 p.m. Tuesday, with many using tax notices. Over 6000 eligible voters remain unregistered. Registration available by mail, via tax notices, or in person at the county tax office in the Terry County Courthouse. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. five days a week.
The newly organized Brownfield Toastmasters Club will receive its charter in a special program on January 17 at the Brownfield Country Club. The group has grown rapidly since its beginning and is one of the town’s interesting new additions.
The South Plains Chapter of API will hold its regular monthly dinner meeting at the Brownfield Country Club Thursday. Social hour starts at 6 30 p m Guest speaker is Jim Kent of Denver City with an OIC program titled To Clear The Air He is active in Oil Information Committee Program work and has been with The Western Company for 17 years serving as sales representative.
Four Terry County couples attended the State Associations convention in Dallas January 3 and 4. Ben Holcomb of Dimmitt was elected president of the Young Farmers and Mrs. Thomas Reed of Palestine was named president of the Young Homemakers for 1969. Other officers named include Parker Yarborough Era first vice president Luther Gregor Brenham J B Lester Gonzales Richard Deal Madisonville James Beaver Falvanna Dick Palmore Dublin Robert Barnwell Pittsburg Joe Sinkule Jr Abbott and Billy Smith George West. Flu Vanna Young Farmers won the Outstanding Chapter award and Young County was named Outstanding New Chapter. Paymaster and Goodpasture Inc. had booths with Bridges and Bob Dumas presenting.
Members of the Howard Henson Post No. 260 will gather at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall for dinner and the first business meeting of the year at 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend.
A free immunization clinic runs today from 2 to 5 p.m. at the South Plains Health Unit on the corner of Fast Main and D Streets. Children aged three months and up who have not had whooping cough diphtheria tetanus measles smallpox or polio vaccines and cannot visit a private doctor are urged to attend. those who began shots at the December clinic should return to complete the series.
Brownfield and Terry County law enforcement report a quiet holiday period with several arrests. Ross Wesley Cochran faces a driving while intoxicated charge with $142.30 bond and six month probation. Multiple others are jailed or released on bonds for DWI, forgery, burglary, theft, and related offenses.
