Texas Almanac reports Terry County averaged 16.81 inches of moisture annually with 1968 totaling 22.42 inches, beating 1967 by 3.64 inches. Monthly rainfall varied from 0.25 inch in September to 4.29 inches in August, while temperatures ranged from 11 to 102 degrees. The first October freeze damaged late cotton.

Brownfield Post Office reports a 19 percent rise in 1968 gross receipts to 158,793.59 from 155,580.42 in 1967 and 33,213.17 higher. Over the past decade receipts declined only three times, marking 1968 as the largest total ever handled by the local post office.
Brownfield citizens paid city taxes early to qualify for discounts before January 1, with 83.61 percent of 1969 taxes collected by 5 p.m. December 31, totaling $173,080.73. Delinquent taxes reached $11,143.28, and total city tax revenue was estimated at $220,323.35. Taxes are due January 31 with penalties for delinquency per state law.
A free immunization clinic will be held Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the South Plains Health Unit on East Main and D Streets. All children three months and older who have not received shots for whooping cough diphtheria tetanus measles smallpox and polio and cannot visit a private doctor are urged to attend. Children who had their first shots in December should return to complete the series.
Brownfield City Police Department will sponsor a five day police training school in January 2024 for local officials and area law enforcement. Captain J T Churchwell notes FBI personnel will lecture 1 to 5 pm daily on legal issues sex crimes bank robbery burglary and other topics with participation invited from federal and state agencies.
The Texas Employment Commission reports Terry County harvested 114,938 bales of cotton this season. Final count was taken at noon Friday with estimates previously between 115,000 and 120,000 bales and 500 to 1,000 bales still to be harvested. The local cotton classing office remains open and a closing date is not set.
