The Ambitious Texas Smuggler Turned Self-Proclaimed Ambassador
Monroe Edwards, a Kentuckian who moved to Texas at 19, became a notorious smuggler and forger. He and associate Christopher Dart bribed officials to smuggle enslaved people, built a Brazoria County plantation, and later forged Dart’s signature in a land and slave transfer. He fled to avoid arrest, claimed hero status after San Jacinto, and in 1839 carried counterfeit introductions from figures such as Daniel Webster.

Texas by Maguire and Van Buren in abolitionist tale returns
A narrative spans 19th century figures, Anglophone intrigue, and prison. It notes a Texas abolitionist’s European sojourn, money swindles in New York, and a Sing Sing death in 1847 after an attempted escape. It then shifts to debates on Texas law, Amtrak schedules, and rail speeds contrasted with French records.
