Final Terry 1961 cotton harvest counted at 165000 bales

The final official 1961 Terry cotton yield is unofficially set at 165000 five hundred pound bales. USDA final accounting due July or August may push production to 175000 to 180000 bales with potential profits between 23.6 and 26.25 million dollars depending on bale price.

Brownlee Seeks Re election as Terry County Superintendent

Elmer G. Brownlee announced Friday his candidacy for re election as Terry County superintendent of schools. He notes his background as an ex teacher who came to Terry in 1935 and taught with Brownfield schools until about 1950. Brownlee invites support at the courthouse office and pledges to carry out duties to the best of his ability if elected.

Bailey seeks second term as Terry County district clerk

L D Bailey announced Friday his bid for a second term as district clerk of Terry County subject to the Democratic Primary in May. A Brownfield resident since 1940 and World War II Navy veteran, he serves on veterans groups and local churches. Also in Brownfield, Animal Warden J D Williamson warns of 300 loose dogs posing health risks, urging tagging and vaccination with $1 tags and $2.50 vaccines. beware dog bites and rabies testing.

Mrs. Carter Rites Held At First Baptist Church

Funeral services for Mrs. D. P. Carter of 1314 East Buckley were held Saturday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Crow officiating. The 80 year old Minnesota native died Thursday evening in Brownfield General Hospital after a six month illness. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, three sons, three daughters, 13 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were local Brownfield men. She had retired from a long teaching career at First Baptist.

Rhyne to Seek Re-election as Terry County Peace Justice

L A Lennie Rhyne announced Friday he will seek another term as justice of the peace for Prec. 1 in Terry County subject to the May Democratic Primary. Born in Bowie, he moved to Terry County in 1930 and has lived there 31 years. He is active in First Baptist Church and a former Noble Grand of Brownfield Lodge 530 Odd Fellows.

BHS Band Director Honored By National Association

Frederick R. Smith of 1220 East Broadway was elected to active membership in the American School Band Directors Association. Smith has directed Brownfield High School Band for 11 years and previously taught at the University of Illinois. He also conducted and taught clarinet in summer sessions at Texas Tech for 11 years and at McMurry in Abilene for nine years. The association, meeting annually in Cleveland, aims to improve school band instruction and performance nationwide.

1961 School Taxes Paid in Brownfield District

Officials report 85 percent of 1961 school taxes collected in the Brownfield Consolidated Independent School District. Taxpayers are urged to pay by February 1, 1962 to avoid penalties. January is the last month with no added charge. Property rendering for tax purposes due by April 1 to improve assessment accuracy. Contact O. L. Thanks for Brownfield helpers After car breakdown

A Brownfield reader thanks the community for help after a breakdown on December 30 1961. A highway patrol ushered the family to warmth, a wrecker arrived, the Ford garage serviced the car, and volunteers gave $40. Special thanks to Mr J W Richardson for his efforts. The note appears in the Brownfield News.

Oklahoma resident among 1962 South Plains traffic fatalities

The first South Plains traffic death of 1962 involves Ernest Raymond Short, 66, of Guthrie Oklahoma, who died at 7 30 p m Friday after a two car crash 23 miles southwest of Brownfield. His wife Anna was driving in the other car with granddaughter Marilyn June Strider 17 of Phoenix treated and released. Carolyn J Jones of Big Spring was alone in the second car and listed in poor condition at Lubbock Methodist Hospital. Short’s body was flown to Guthrie for burial with arrangements handled by Brown.

Dickson family attends DePort funeral services

Mr. and Mrs. Grady K. Dickson of 1303 East Harris traveled to DePort with their daughter Mrs. Marlin Speed and her family of Route 2 to attend the funeral services for his father.
