Annual Summary Shows Growth and Influence in TSCD 1961

The ninth annual 1961 Terry Soil Conservation District report lists 574720 acres under district care. Five elected landowner supervisors govern the district for five years. Brownfield produced the 44 page color report with ads funded by local organizations and banks. During 1961, 90 farmers joined as cooperators and 595 received soil conservation service assistance.

Carl Stephenson Enters Race for Precinct 2 Commissioner

Meadow resident A C Carl Stephenson announced his candidacy for Precinct 2 commissioner. He pledged equal treatment, full time county service, and expertise in road maintenance, noting 28 years in the county and asking for votes in the Democratic primary on May 5.

R L Bob Burnett announced to the NEWS on Wednesday his plan to seek re election as commissioner of Precinct 4. He addressed Terry County voters and citizens and urged support in his re election bid.

Five Outstanding Young Texans named for 1961

The Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce names five outstanding young Texans for 1961. The group includes E. R. Gregg Jr. of Jacksonville Jarrell Franklin McCracken of Waco Robert Lee Smith Jr. of College Station Thomas Raymond Thornton of Belton and Craig Woodson of Brownwood. They will be honored at a January 13 banquet in Odessa with Paul Harvey as speaker.

Big Election Year on Tap For Voters

County tax assessor Akers notes 1 052 poll tax receipts issued since Oct 1 and 478 exemptions. All Texans aged 21 to 60 must have a poll tax receipt to vote in any election. Exemption certificates may be free for seniors or those who turned 21 after Jan 1 1961.

County Clerk Wade Yandell Seeks Re-Election

County Clerk Wade Yandell announced Tuesday plans to run again for county clerk, contingent on the Democratic Primary on May 5. The 33-year-old Terry resident, born in Lynn County, holds a bachelor of business administration from Texas Tech and is married to Stella Sue Moore. He urged voters to pay poll taxes to vote and asked residents to seek information on poll tax requirements by telephone.
