Brownfield Cub girls fall to defending champ in Lubbock

The Brownfield High School Cub girls basketball season ended with a 60 to 36 defeat in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum as they faced the defending champions.

Brownfield girls land three on 3-AAA all district team

Brownfield High School three Lady Cubs Staci Martin Deborah Williams and Sheryl Swoopes earned District 3-AAA all-league honors with Kelly Chaffin receiving honorable mention seven other Slaton players also named to the district squad. Williams and Swoopes had earlier been named to the Region I All-Tournament Team after Brownfield finished runner up in district play. Coach Dee Blevins praised the season as one of the best for the Cub girls.

Ambulance Bid Approved by BRMC Board

In a 25 minute special session the Terry Memorial Hospital District board approved the Aid Ambulance Inc. bid from Lubbock for a new ambulance service contract by a majority vote. The city county and hospital district will provide an annual subsidy of 93867 dollars with base rates of 85 dollars per run and 20 dollars for an emergency run.

Local police investigate Brownfield weekend thefts and damage

Brownfield Police reported over a dozen incidents including $700 damage to a 1986 Pontiac at First National Bank and thefts of wheel covers from a 1976 Cadillac in the 1200 block of East Broadway. Also stolen were $400 in shop parts, a MAC digital Engine analyzer worth $290, auto parts, four cafeteria windows damaged, and a flat bed trailer valued at $1,250.

Terry County commissioners, Brownfield leaders and hospital board weigh jail space shortages after a Texas Jail Standards inspection. Officials note separate housing needs by felony, misdemeanor and gender, with a long term solution calling for a ground level jail away from the courthouse. Eight BHS Spirit of the Plains earns state solo ensemble bids

Brownfield High School students in the Spirit of the Plains band earned eight Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest berths with Division I medals. Key performers include Paul Porter Walt Jones Kyle Kingsley Brent Jones in a cornet quartet Robert Buesing on French horn Land Perez Kyle Jones and Robert Bermen in a cornet trio. The event occurred Saturday at Texas Tech with the state contest slated for Austin in June. Majorettes Sharla Blay and Shay Moore also qualified for the state twirling contest, while Manuel Perez and Jon Troutman earned area level slots in trombone and alto sax respectively.

Sesqui centennial oak planted at Terry County courthouse

On Monday county and city officials joined the Terry County Sesquicentennial Committee for an Oak Tree Planting on the courthouse southside. Donated Red Oak and Heritage Live Oak trees from the Texas Forestry Service and Strom Nursery of Permont were dedicated for 1986 as part of the Texas Sesicentennial.

Garcia files for seat on City Council in Brownfield

Hector Garcia Jr. candidacy for place two on the Brownfield City Council is supported by his birth in Brownfield on April 22, 1962 and a long local history. He is a Meadow High School 1980 graduate, attended South Plains College, and has worked at Hester Implement since 1981. He married Hortencia Rodriguez on April 28, 1984, attends St. Anthony's Catholic Church, and the couple has taught CCD for three years and he coached a Brownfield minor league baseball team last year. They reside at 419 S 5th St.

Grimaldo Announces Council Bid in Brownfield

Francisco Grimaldo declares candidacy for Brownfield City Council precinct one in a statement to the NEWS this week. He cites a 12 year marriage to Graviela and their five children Graviella Ann age 10 in third grade plus two more daughters and a son.
