District voting will replace at large seats for three council districts in Brownfield for the April 5 election due to a voting rights lawsuit. The mayor and two at large seats remain elected citywide. Incumbent Mayor Tommy Hicks seeks a second term unopposed.
Brownfield led 8-0 and never trailed as the Cub Girls, led by Sheryl Swoopes Sandra Jordan and Deborah Williams, overpowered Comanche 49-42 to reach the regional final. The game featured tight defense and early scoring bursts through the first quarter and a scoreless stretch in the second before Comanche finally found the basket.
Rep. Brownfield's Jim Rudd warns of a looming Texas deficit tied to oil price drops. Gov. White orders a 13 percent agency cut while critics fear deeper service cuts and possible tax increases. Rudd says legislature controls only about 30 percent of the budget as he deflects tax hike prospects.
Kendrick Memorial Library hosts an open house on March 2 from 2 to 4 p m to celebrate Texas Independent Day and the Texas Sesquicentennial. An Institute of Texas Culture traveling exhibit titled Texas Images features 20 photographs of state symbols from bluebonnet to the roadrunner and Alamo facade.
The Terry County Grand Jury indicted Santiago Heredia Reyes for allegedly causing serious bodily injury to Maria Salinas on December 29, 1985 by striking her with a rifle stock. Bond set at $15,000. Martin Flores indicted for allegedly misappropriating Nancy Garcia’s property by selling a liened 1976 Oldsmobile without disclosure on July 1, 1984. Bond set at $2,500. Klyde Allen indicted for allegedly renting Holiday House Inn services to Henry A. Kolesnik without payment from December 30, 1985 to January 4, 1986, with totals listed.
