Ity manager Dick Fletcher said severe December and January snowfall slowed meter readings by two weeks causing February bills to cover six weeks rather than one. Snow depths exceeded eight inches in early January with further storms on Jan 21 and 22. Meter reader Sylvia Gonzales noted readings were taken as available.
Terry County residents face a March 2 filing deadline for April 2 board races including school, city, and hospital posts. Brownfield City Council held a three and a half hour session Thursday morning with City Manager Dick Fletcher proposing an electric rate increase. If approved for the fiscal year starting April 1, residential base will rise from 6.50 to 7.00 dollars and first 100 kilowatt hours will cost more for commercial users, increasing from 11.00 to 11.50. The move aims to generated about 337,000 dollars, slightly above the 330,000 dollar rise in power generation costs for 1982 83. The session included a public hearing on a zoning change for Charles Davis at 821 East Main Street to permit a ceramic shop, delayed after Vargas and council discussions. Davis previously built the shop in defiance of zoning, then reapplied for rezoning with a council backed zoning board recommendation to approve. The four block area from Tohoko Road to Main Street and from C to D Street would be affected, requiring a larger connected C 1 zone. Page 4.
The Brownfield Crime Information Inc offers a 300 reward for information leading to arrest and indictment of burglars who stole two handguns from Western Auto between February 7 and February 17 1983. A Ruger .357 and a Targa .38 were taken. A separate burglary at Charlie Price's Warehouse 600 West Main occurred the weekend of February 12 13 1983, with a Tappan Microwave Oven taken after a window was broken.
A 1979 yellow Chevrolet pickup license 9540 was stolen in a burglary at Finley’s Used Car Lot on Lubbock Road on February 12, 1983. Police seek suspects connected to the theft and break in.
In 121st District Court Judge Ray Anderson accepted two guilty pleas this week. Edward Garcia pleaded guilty to burglary of a motor vehicle and received a nine year probated sentence with a 500 dollar fine plus 4971.35 restitution and 97.50 in costs, plus a 15 dollar monthly probation fee and curfew. Benancio Vela Garcia pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness and received a two year probated sentence with 97.50 costs and a 15 dollar monthly probation fee, plus curfew and standard terms.
