Brownfield embraces TSTI vocational training effort

A Brownfield committee reports progress toward a Texas State Technical Institute program for Terry County farm workers. A welding refresher course runs March 7 to 9, four weeks, 16 hours total, at the Terry County Barn for eighty cents per classroom hour.

Brownfield Jaycees honor 32nd Distinguished Service Awards

The Brownfield Jaycees held their 32nd annual Distinguished Service Awards Banquet at Brownfield Country Club Saturday night with Bill Long as master of ceremonies. State Rep. R. B. McAlister spoke on the Must Thrust urging community youth involvement and enthusiasm to drive Brownfield forward. Mrs. Alton Nicholson received Jayceeette honors, while Mrs. Bill Long was named Outstanding Jaycee-ette.

Cotton meeting urged by Jim Foy for area farmers

Jim Foy county agent urges all area farmers to attend a 2 p.m. meeting on February 10 at the Party House. Speakers include Dr. Bob Metzer cotton specialist Leon New irrigation specialist and Marvin Sartin farm management specialist all from Lubbock. Johnny Stockton county ASCS officer will discuss feed grain sorghum land quality and set aside acres changes.

Chesshir entries candidacy for Terry County judge

Herb Chesshir filed for county judge of Terry County as a Democratic primary candidate. He previously served as county judge from 1952 to 1960 before resigning to return to business with Reliable Gin Company. Chesshir urged voters to investigate his character and qualifications and said he seeks better government and a stronger community with community support.

Brownfield Senior Wins Legion Oratorical Award

Glen Schmucker, 17, Brownfield High School senior, won the Howard-Henson American Legion Post annual oratorical award. He will represent Terry County in District 19 at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Coronado High School in Lubbock. The son of Mr and Mrs B G Schmucker, the family moved here from Louisiana ten years ago.

Optimists Ready to Stage Three Night Basketball Tourney

Optimists announce three night event in the Middle School auditorium with open division men and women teams. Games start at 6 p m Thursday through Saturday, with trophies for first and second places and a concession stand. Brackets appear in the News. 25 cent admission for students and adults.

Garrett elected TCCAA president

The Terry County Community Action Association held a regular session with about twenty attendees. New officers were elected including Jack Garrett as president and Bertha Ortiga to a one year term on the Neighborhood Council. A trip to Austin explored on the job training funds and a memorial praise for Judge W. T. McKinney was approved.

Judge Truman Roberts to Speak at Terry County Banquet

The banquet honoring Terry County law enforcement officers will feature Judge Truman Ernest Roberts of Hamilton as guest speaker. Roberts heads the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and previously served ten years as District Judge of the 52nd Judicial District. The event, sponsored by the American Legion, is at 7:30 p.m. February 24 in the American Legion Hall with details to follow.
