Local businessmen discuss South Plains College District inclusion

A group from the Chamber of Commerce met to review the county joining the South Plains College District. Dr. Marvin Baker outlined benefits, financing, and facilities, noting 105 Terry County residents attend the college. Additional details and a decision are pending.

Fishing brings pleasure and profit to local catfish farmer

Herbert Hoss Singlettery operates a 14 acre pond two miles southwest of Wellman on Seagraves highway stocking about 4 000 channel catfish from Mississippi. He seals the pond bottom with salt to prevent seepage and uses a north south layout to reduce wave wash. The fish grow quickly with careful aeration in cloudy or hot weather, averaging around a pound each at harvest.

Filing open for mayor and two city council seats

Applications for mayor and two city council positions are obtainable at the office of Zelma Miller, city secretary, starting at 8 a.m. The final base count for the 1971 cotton cropwas 80,848 pounds according to Guy Britton of the Texas Employment Commission. He noted most guns have accumulated remnants and red tags, bringing the count close to expectations for a fine crop.

City Council Sets April 4 Election Day For Mayor And Council

The City Council scheduled a city officers election for Tuesday April 4 with polls from 8 am to 7 pm Wayne Sims will be judge and Jack Greenfield alternate judge. Terms of Mayor Jack Hamilton and Councilmen Preston Hester and Alton Webb expire. The council approved talks with property owners to open Grace Street to Cedar and considered two turn lanes on Fir and D. Local police leaders attended the traffic discussion and Mini Park plans were noted.

Cargill Announces Candidacy for Terry County Judge

Darwin Cargill, owner of Cargill's Equipment Co. at 1301 Lubbock Road, declares his bid for Terry County judge in the Democratic primary on May 6 1972. A long time resident born Gomez March 5 1931, he vows to serve all residents and meets voters across the county. He and wife LaQuita and daughter Kim live at 613 South 1st St. Brownfield. He has run his Brownfield business since July 16 1969 and studied at Texas A&M and Texas Tech after Brownfield High School class of 1948.

Third consumer program presented at Brownsfield High

The third of four consumer education programs will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Little Theatre at Brownsfield High School. Leonard Ellington of the First National Bank Brownfield will discuss Look at Your Family’s Business with a Q A session to follow. No admission charge and open to all residents.

Optimist Club basketball tournament set for February event

The Opti mist Club hosts a three day basketball tournament in the Middle School gymnasium February 10 to 12. Admission is 25 cents with games from 6 to 11 30 p m each night. Open and club divisions offer first second and consolation trophies. Six open men teams and at least two women s teams are registered with more possible. Cotton meeting set for Thursday at the Party House

County agent Jim Foy announced a 2 p m Thursday February 10 cotton meeting at the Party House. Hale seeks Terry County Attorney seat in Brownfield bid

Jim Pete Hale a Brownfield attorney with McGowan and McGowan announced his candidacy for Terry County Attorney. He and his wife Janice Jordan live on Route 1 Brownfield with two children. Hale a Texas Tech and UT Austin law graduate belongs to multiple bar and civic groups and pledges to work with county officials for better government.
