Historian to Speak at Brownfield Chamber Banquet

Jack Maguire, Texas historian and author of Talk of Texas, will speak at the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Banquet at 7 p.m. January 18 in the BHS Commons. The event will honor Terry County’s Outstanding Citizen of 1985 and install 1986 chamber officers and directors.

Brownfield Records Seven December Building Permits

The City of Brownfield issued seven building permits in December totaling 123,700, lifting 1985 year total to 2,623,155, about 85,000 above 1984’s 2,538,400. A year-end wrapup will appear in the next NEWS. Permits include remodel of a commercial building at 303 S First St 200. Rodis David fence at 411 N Fifth St 100. Don Robertson residence addition at 513 Park Lane 8,500. Aaron Roberts conference room at 401 N 1st 105,000. Delores Craig con at 1218 E Hester 4,350. Eddins-Walcher commercial at 602 Lubbock Rd 5,500. Chris Infante fence at 511 W Harris 50.

Christmas quiet in Brownfield with minor incidents

Brownfield police saw a calm holiday period with a windshield smashed on a 1978 Oldsmobile at a South 4th Street residence. Four assaults or disturbances, two criminal mischief cases, a gasoline theft, and a fortres sing noted. Twelve arrests were made for DUI, license, traffic, public intoxication, affray, resisting arrest, and fighting officers. Local youths Ann McIlveen 12, Sarah Hardy 9, and Rachel Hardy 7 enjoyed vacation as warm weather and skating framed the day.

Goodfellows Serve 140 City Families During Christmas

The Brownfield Goodfellows delivered gifts and food to 140 area families over Christmas. The families served had 480 children. Workers began assembling boxes early in the week before Christmas moving toys from the Fire Station to the County Rodeo Barn, the group’s Christmas HQ. Toys were placed by age and sex with each child receiving at least one new toy and one used toy.

Commissioners call special session Monday

The Terry County Commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. Monday to open bids for a new sheriff’s department vehicle and to consider bids on a bulldozer for county roads. They will also discuss easements at the Terry County Airport. A Christmas Eve food drive collected toys, food, cash and volunteers from Brownfield and Terry County communities.

New Years Eve Schedule Disrupts City News Delivery

The edition to the NEWS will be completed and go to press Monday for New Year’s Day. Deadline for news and advertising is noon Monday. The paper is to be distributed Tuesday afternoon and the NEWS office will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Terry County's 16 gins had processed 116,846 bales of cotton by Friday morning per the Texas Employment Commission weekly survey. This compares with 56,196 bales processed by Terry County gins at the same point last year.
