Special Brownfield News issue to explore Terry County history

A January Brow nfield News tabloid will present Terry County and Brownfield history. Journalist Billie Norman is writing the piece for the January 19 issue and at a January 18 chamber banquet. Chamber keynote Jack Maguire, noted Texas historian, will speak at the sesquicentennial themed event.

Terry County Commissioners approve final 1985 agenda items

The Terry County Commissioners in their last regular session of 1985 approved the monthly ambulance report and discussed the county clerk’s monthly report on a computer. November ambulance runs totaled 52 with 41 in Brownfield and 95.09 percent collections. They debated a county computer system, and a separate voting machines proposal was tabled. They also approved $75 foster parent reimbursements and discussed merging some county voting boxes.

1985 Terry County Cotton Harvest Nears Finish

The 1985 Terry County cotton harvest is winding down as gins report 105,152 bales ginned. Jay Chambliss of the Texas Employment Commission notes last year’s December total was 56,000 bales and most of the crop has been stripped and is awaiting transport. Gins say processing should end in a couple of weeks, with Meadow Farmer's Co-op predicting about two weeks remaining and 1,000 bales left.

Bethlehem Birth and Angel Chorus Reported in Luke Tale

The cradle story recounts Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem as crowds register for a census. An angel announces the Savior’s birth to shepherds, who visit the manger and spread the news. The episode ends with praise to God as the shepherds return to their fields. Foster Gin Co. notes four more weeks of work remaining on current harvest tasks.

Brownfield girls extend winning streak in district play

Brownfield High School varsity girls beat Lubbock Cooper 45-43 on the road to move to 2-0 in district and 10-3 overall. Traci Martin scored 16 and Sheryl Swoopes 10 as the Cub lineup erased a first quarter 15-10 deficit, forcing a 28-26 halftime lead and extending the advantage through the third period. Junior varsity also won, 45-30, and both teams set action for January 2 at Frenship.

Friends form Frank Lemon Fund at First National Bank

A fund to aid Frank Lemon with medical expenses has been set up by his friends at the First National Bank. Lemon is undergoing cancer treatments, and contributions may be made at FNB.
