A total of 190 Brown Field High School students, about 30 percent of the student body, were named to the A and A-B honor rolls for the second six weeks of the Fall semester. The list includes 40 students.
Salvador Miranda was sentenced to life in prison by an eight man, four woman Gaines County jury for the capital murder of Darryl Vandivere. Vandivere disappeared from a Brownfield area farm on Nov. 5, 1984 and his body was found Nov. 23, 1985 in Cedar Lake, Gaines County. The jury deliberated nearly three and a half hours to reach the verdict and seven more hours to decide on life imprisonment, the alternative being the death penalty. Miranda’s cousin Eraclio Miranda pleaded guilty to capital murder and received life imprisonment in exchange for testimony. Defense was by Salvador Otero, with prosecutors Gaines County District Attorney Rickey Smith and ADA Joe Smith presenting the case. The judge presiding was Gene Dulaney. The Terry Memorial Hospital district board heard accountant Larry Anderson of Mason, Warner and Co. present the 1985 86 audit. Net revenues fell due to fewer patient days with DRG payment rules cited as a factor. The board discussed physician recruitment and approved paying bills after a brief staff report.

Terry County Judge and Commissioners Court invite the public to an open house at 919 East Main for the South Plains Health Unit the Terry County Mental Health Clinic and the Department of Human Services from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on December 17. The county-owned building was destroyed by fire February 8, 1986 and restored by Leon Jones Construction at a contract cost of 170,000 funded 135,000 by insurance and 35,000 by the Texas Department of Human Services.
The Terry County Commissioners met Monday and approved monthly reports from Sheriff Ralph Murry Justice of the Peace Carolyn Procter Veterans Service officer Don Harwood District Clerk Betty Frazier County Clerk Ann Willis and Tax Assessor-Collector Rechelle Davis. They discussed enlarging the county barn for the stock show and rejected paying for Classic Service by General Telephone. They approved Leon Jones Construction Company bill for 7176.17 to finish renovation of the fire damaged county health building.
