Cubs Begin Fall Practice Under Coach Cox Two Weeks From Season

About 45 aspirants report Friday to Coach Doug Cox at 6:30 a.m. for the fall grid training. Twice daily sessions start Friday and Saturday with single sessions starting Monday. Examinations are set for 6:30 p.m. today in the old fieldhouse. all athletes must pass to participate. Only four of last year’s regulars return, forcing Cox to rebuild the left side and shore up defense and a passing attack ahead of the Sept. 12 game vs Levelland.

Pounds Elected Head of Local Quarterback Club

Pounds of 502 East Tate was elected to lead the Quarterback Club for this year with L. D. Bailey and H. M. Duke Pyeatt as officers. About 30 attended the kickoff meeting in the junior high cafeteria. A season ticket sale committee was formed and plans for a membership drive outlined. Humble Oil’s 1957 Southwest Conference Football Highlights will be shown at the Sept. 9 meeting.

Plane crashes on Ralph Butcher farm injures Gorby

A plane dusting cotton struck a 10 foot steel air vent pipe on the Ralph Butcher farm. The crash site left the pilot Gorby with only minor injuries due to thick cotton and soft ground. Authorities investigated the unusual incident as a farm accident.

Field Day At Terry Sandyland Experimental Plot Set For Tuesday

A field day will be held Tuesday from 8 30 a m to 12 30 p m at the Terry sandyland experimental area on the Eulice Farrar Farm three miles northwest of Gomez. County Agent Jim Foy says area farmers and businessmen may view and discuss experimental work including fertilizer trials irrigation studies planting methods and crop rotation with tours led by Terry implement dealers. Results are expected to aid sandyland production across Terry and neighboring counties. Goodpasture Grain Company will provide morning refreshments.

Mullins Settle Win In County Runoff In November Race

Wayne Mullins Jr and H B Settle won county commissioner posts in the only county races in Saturdays Second Primary. Robert Hamilton led Edwin Smith for the Place Supreme Court seat. Mullins ousted incumbent A C Stephenson for Precinct 2, while Settle won Precinct 3 after a late box surge. Hamilton led Smith by 639 to 371, with a state wide margin near 50,000 votes. Both pairs advance to the November General Election where a Democratic primary victory secures office.

Rotary Governor to Visit Brownfield Club Friday

Burnett B. Roberts of Levelland will join Brownfield Rotary Club for a Friday noon meeting as part of his annual tour to all 43 clubs in 59 North West Texas counties. The governor will meet with President Sammy Jones Lecy Ellington and Rotary committee chairs to discuss administration and service activities.

Rites Held Tuesday For Mrs Sampson

Last rites for Mrs. D. S. Sampson 65 of 606 Fast Hill were at First Methodist Church with Rev. James Tidwell and Rev. R C Simms officiating. She died Monday at Treadaway Daniels Hospital after a long illness. Burial in Pioneer Cemetery of Graham. Survived by husband Bob, daughter Mrs W R Terry, daughter Mrs Jay Edwards, son Bob Sampson, three brothers, one sister, and five grandchildren.

Kellie Sears Injured in One-Vehicle Crash

Kellie Sears of Route 2 was injured when a front tire blew out on his pickup causing a one vehicle accident two miles south of Wellman. He was taken to Treadaway-Daniell Hospital with a dislocated shoulder.

Veterans and federal workers in Terry County who have exhausted unemployment insurance may file extended benefit claims from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays at the Brownfield Texas Employment Commission office. Services Today for Mrs James Finley

Services were to be held at 10 a.m. today for Mrs. James E Finley 34 wife of a prominent Brownfield dentist who died Tuesday night at her home. Final rites at First Methodist Church with Rev James E Tidwell officiating burial in Terry County Memorial Cemetery by Brownfield Funeral Home. She is survived by two sons Terry and Mike a daughter Meg her parents Mr and Mrs A T Capps of Tina Missouri and one sister Mrs Gloria Edwards of Fort Worth.

Tea for Brownfield School Faculty and Officials
