Terry County Faces 7000 Cotton Puller Shortage This Fall

Texas Employment Commission estimates Terry County will need 7000 seasonal farm workers during the peak harvest. A three man Farm Labor Committee reviewed the figure and learned the deficit will be filled by Mexican braceros under Public Law 78. The panel includes R. D. Jones Sr., R. N. McClain, and O. R. Douglas with TEC and Brownfield Lamesa managers present. The notice appears on page 5.

Brownfield’s Don O’Neal advanced to the second round at the Muleshoe Country Club Golf Tournament with a 5 and 4 win over John Renner of Friona. He carded a 3 under par 9 to claim medalist honors before Mitchell and Wilson shot 70. Field Day Set For Tuesday At Sandyland Experimental Site

Initial results from the Terry’s Sandyland plot on the Eulice Farrar farm near Gomez will be presented during a field day tour from 8 30 a m to 12 30 p m Tuesday. County Agent Jim Foy says the event offers first hand input on sandyland farming to area farmers and businessmen. Findings cover fertilizer rates, irrigation studies, planting methods and crop rotation for cotton and grain sorghums with results shared across Terry Cochran Yoakum Dawson Gaines Hockley Lynn Martin Bailey and Lubbock counties.

County Budget Gets Approval on Friday for 1958 59

Ter ry County commissioners approved the 1958 59 budget Friday totaling 771137 with an increase of about 60 thousand from last year. Major rises occurred in Permanent Fund 23000 Paying 26500 Library 8000 and a 1700 raise for the probation officer serving a district from Lamesa.

Nicholson Named Round-Up Chairman in South Plains Scout Council

Fred R. Nicholson of 601 East Broadway was appointed Round-Up chairman for Quanah Parker District of the South Plains Boy Scout Council. The Eagle Scout will oversee the district fall membership drive with a November climax event. Neckerslides and Recruiter patches will be awarded to new members and recruiters, with honors for units meeting goals.
