A Brownfield survey finds 56.2 percent of local households earn $4,000 or more, higher than the West South Central region and Texas averages. The report links rising income to stronger consumer purchasing power and broader local prosperity as noted in the Nation's business report.
Meadow school plans Friday registration for all grades with sessions by class level in the high school and grade school buildings. Superintendent Odell Wilkes says textbooks lockers and bus routes will be assigned and a public assembly is set for the high school gym. A bus driver meeting is scheduled Saturday morning with first runs Monday. The fall faculty includes Mrs Cottie Woods Mrs Sue Hunter and many others across grades and departments.
The Terry County Commissioners approved a $25 raise for assistants to elected officials and road staff effective Sept 1. Officials cited low pay as a drag on operations. The court also ordered $4,665 repaid to the state for vehicle tag violations and approved a $2,000 release to improve X ray facilities and a Monsanto oil lease on school land in Gaines County. Attendees included Judge Chesshir and county officials.
L. D. Bailey of 505 East Sons was elected president of Brownfield Quarterback Club at the first 1959 meeting held Monday in The Party House. Other officers named include Dean Murphy and H. M. Pyeatt. The group planned season ticket sales for the opener against Colorado City's Wolves on September 4 at 8 p.m. in Brownfield.
The piece urges motorists to drive safely in school zones as children return to classes next week. It also advertises Fen ton’s new children’s shoe department with live monkeys and prize giveaways, Newton & Webb Implement opening with door prizes, and White’s Auto Store grand opening with registration for rewards.
Local ownership opens White's Auto at 308 Lubbock Road a family affair led by Tom Crawford, former contractor. Sandra Kay and Tommy Crawford help run the shop with longtime Brownfield businessman CC L Aven. The 3600 square foot fireproof store features new fixtures and fluorescent lighting as construction continues.
Funeral services for R. F. Herron 61 of Route 3 are set for 2 p m at First Methodist Church. Herron died 11 43 p m Tuesday at Terry County Hospital after a five week illness. He moved to the area in 1939 from Taylor County worked as a farmer until 1953 then lived in New Mexico before returning to Terry County in January. Burial will be at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. Brownfield Funeral Home in charge. Surviving: wife two sons R G Herron and Alvin Herron one daughter Annie Pearl Newberry one sister Annie E Self nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Old Brownfield firm moves to a concrete and steel structure at 409 Lubbock Road across from the former site. O. V. Newton Alton Webb and Tom Carter invite the public for a Saturday opening with refreshments and a chance to win a 5 horsepower Mercury outboard motor. The firm will continue selling Case tractors and implements and sporting goods with service led by Monroe Talley.
J. C. Ebersole joins the U S Soil Conservation Service in Brownfield after 24 years in the field, with agronomy training from Oklahoma A&M. His wife will teach at Jessie G Randal. They recently found a home and have a daughter in Big Spring, affiliated with First Baptist Church.
C. E. Hicks, vice chairman of Terry Soil Conservation District, reviews the new three color four cent soil conservation commemorative stamp displayed by Postmaster William C. Brown. Hicks plans to buy a year’s supply for TSCD as the stamp goes on sale here today.
The First Presbyterian pulpit will be filled by Rev Ralph O Dell on Sunday after his 60 day European tour. Carl Zimmerman from Truth or Consequences New Mexico aided services in his absence. Zimmerman attends Austin Theological Seminary and took part in the San Antonio Texas Youth Synod. The synod ends Saturday. Brownfield residents returning include Mrs O Dell and Mrs Tom May of East Cardwell, Loyd Moore and daughter Linda of East Buckley. Three Lubbock women also traveled with the group and are named J B Cardwell Mrs Sim O Neal and Mrs Mabel Jones.
