Latin American Man Fatally Shot After Clash at Cafe

Frutoso Gutierrez, 61, of Brownfield died from a single .22 caliber bullet at 500 West Hill in a dispute outside Mike's Cafe. Suspect Aveline DeLeon, 37, of North Fifth, is jailed on murder with malice charges in Terry County after allegedly firing one shot. bond set at 10,000 by JP Lonnie Rhyne.

Burleson Grain Elevator Sold Names New Owner

The Burleson Grain Elevator at Meadow is sold to Goodpasture Grain & Milling Company of Meadow. Marcus Burleson and Grady Goodpasture announced the sale, with L. T. Stone of Brownfield as operator. Burleson retires after 15 years in the grain business and 26 years managing a gin. He is a former Meadow mayor and a Ter ry Courty Farm Bureau member.

Son is Born in Lub bock Methodist Hospital

Jeffrey Lynn Wright was born at 9 52 p m Thursday in Methodist Hospital in Lub bock. Parents are Mrs Lynn J Wright of 709 Cactus Lane and the late Mr Wright. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs M A Gorman of 709 Cactus and Mr and Mrs R E Wright of Littlefield.

Lightning kills farm laborer near Wellman

A 26 year old Latin American farm laborer Samuel T. Barrera died Friday night after a lightning strike 3 miles south of Wellman on the Rufus Dill farm. The body was found about 15 minutes later and Justice of the Peace Lonnie Rhyne pronounced him dead at the scene. The sheriff said the force of the bolt ripped Barrera’s clothes from his body.

Miss Pat Runnels Receives Brownfield Scholarship

Miss Pat Runnels daughter of Mr and Mrs Dewey Runnels of 1005 East Hill won a 200 annual student loan scholarship for five years from the Maids and Matrons Club. The same student will also receive a Texas Tech award to study music with a commercial art minor and work with Lavern Collier in Lubbock.

Airman Chosen for Antarctic Deep Freeze Phase Five

Technical Sgt. Fred J. Downing, husband of Selma Bing ham Downing of 1105 East Hill, will join Operation Deepfreeze Phase Five in Antarctica. A 1950 graduate of Wellman High School, he serves as flight chief on a C 125 Globemaster with the 15th Troop Carrier Squadron. His wife and two children reside in Greenville, South Carolina.

Committee sets harvest worker needs for cotton in county

The Terry Farm Labor Committee says about 8 460 cotton pullers will be needed during peak harvest. Doves Plentiful as Terry Hunters Prepare for Season

Two Brownfield Residents Injured in Separate Mishaps

Julian C. Lopez, 37, of North Sixth, fell 30 feet from a catwalk at Western Cottonoil Company and suffered a broken arm and leg. He was listed in serious condition at Terry County Hospital. Kerry Beth Nowell, 15, of 905 East Lake, sustained head and back lacerations after falling from a car rear bumper near Brownfield High School. She was observed overnight and released.
