The Brownfield Independent School District approved a 59 cent per one hundred valuation property tax rate and a 7.8 million dollar budget for 1984 85. The board funded a minimum 1700 per year raise for all BISD teachers, after hours of meetings and executive session to review House Bill 72 impacts and tax implications.
Brownfield 1984 Harvest Festival Queen candidates opened ticket sales for the October 6 event. Five seniors Loretta Ortiz Renee West Paige McCutcheon Martha Jones and Kendra Willis compete with a talent show October 4 and a parade float on October 6. The festival theme is America Land of the Free. BISD voters will elect the queen amid a tax-rate discussion tied to the 1985-86 school year. Assistant Superintendent James Willis reviewed the budget line by line with Don Hendley as the board approved 4,028,131 local funds with remaining support from federal and state sources.
The BISD board accepted Perry Lockett's resignation after he cited state nepotism laws restricting his sister’s teaching position. In the same meeting the board approved four new teachers, accepted Deborah Jones’s SPIN resignation, and adopted a policy limiting student absences for extracurriculars, prompted by HB 72.
Brownfield High School presents the Spirit of the Plains Band in concert at Cub Gym at 8 p.m. Thursday directed by Rob and Barbara Lovett. The program honors the football team and introduces drum major Raymond Vasquez, the majorettes Renee West D Ann Steele Shay Moore Heather Skiles Debbie Fletcher Sharla Blay and flag girls Rosa Barraza Shawna Cannon Penny Ervin Kim Hester Caren Milburn Patti O Briant Peggy Rodriguez Kendra Willis Melisa Torbert Tylithia Bell Irene Martinez. Also notes Spanish Enrichment Program enrollments for elementary through middle school students.
Registration for the annual Terry County Old Settlers Reunion opens at 9 a.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall. Over 250 residents attended last year. The Terry County Old Settlers Association sponsors the event with noon meal service at 11:45. Attendees bring a covered dish. a program by a First Baptist Church women’s group follows with gifts for the oldest man and woman, longest-married couple, and farthest-traveled old settler. In Dallas the GOP opens its 1984 convention focusing on the woman factor with Ferraro’s candidacy cited by Democrats. Sen. Howard Baker rebutted Mondale and tied him to the Carter era while welcoming former Democrats backing Reagan. Engineers introduced a ceiling robot camera to secure network shots as the event aims for prime time coverage.
