BISD considers 84-85 budget and tax rate Monday

BISD board plans to approve the 1984-85 budget and tax rate Monday night under HB 72 requirements. The 59 cent rate, up 7.99 percent from the 54.371 cent rate, reflects reduced property values and new programs. Also on the agenda is the resignation of board member Perry Lockett, effective due to a relative seeking a BISD teaching position.

Old Settlers Reunion set for Saturday at American Legion Hall

Terry County hosts the 24th Old Settlers Reunion next Saturday at the American Legion Hall with 9 a.m. registration and 11:45 a.m. meal. The Old Settler's Association provides meat, attendees bring a covered dish, and entertainment includes a First Baptist Church women's trio. Prizes include Texas Scratch Pads for the farthest traveler, oldest man and woman, longest-married couple, and a Dalhart Windberg print door prize. Last year 267 attended.

Vandals Hit Brownfield Middle School Art Room and Vehicles

Damage totaling about 800 dollars struck the Brownfield Middle School Art Room late Tuesday night or Wednesday with red paint on floors and walls and obscene words painted inside. Items reported missing include art supplies a five gallon stripper a 30 inch floor buffer a water picker and scrub pads found in an alley. Vehicles and a local business also suffered significant vandalism including a 1977 Dodge and a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. Burglaries and window breakage were reported at Leveta's Place with candy and drinks stolen.

Area schools release registration schedules across districts

Brownfield High students register this week with middle school times set for eighth at 9 a.m., seventh at 10 a.m., sixth at 11. Intermediate, Oak Grove and Colonial Heights note 9 a.m. to noon Friday. Meadow, Union and Wellman districts specify first day times for grades and new students with immunization records. Plains reports high school already registered. junior high and elementary start at 8:15 a.m. on Aug 27.

Brownfield Council Delays Energas Franchise Update

Brownfield City Council met to discuss the Energas franchise and a proposed rate hike. The second reading of the Energas franchise was postponed amid negotiations over language changes by the city and Energas lawyers. A public hearing on the rate hike led to a 90 day suspension starting July 19, preventing an August 11 implementation. A steering committee from affected cities will study options and report back. Councilman Joe Sears was named the city’s Terry County Cemetery Board representative, with the city contributing $7400 annually. The council will appeal a $208 700 Community Block Grant application after a technical error in the figures.

Lab grown human skin hailed as breakthrough in burn treatment

Paper describes a new lab culture technique that grows patient skin for grafts. Two boys burned over 90 percent of their bodies received grafts from their own lab grown skin, avoiding rejection and infection. Cultures expanded rapidly, producing large amounts of usable skin in weeks.

Parks Adopt Rules With Signs In City Parks

Park Board approves posted rules banning alcohol and vehicles outside designated areas with a 15 mph limit and 7 am to midnight hours. Violators may be escorted and charged with trespassing if they return the same day. Plans discuss fencing, trails, water well feasibility, and future park improvements through private donations.
