A Terry County marketing study from Standard Rate and Data Service shows 4.913 million dollars spent on food for home consumption in the past year across local supermarkets bakeries and grocers. The average household outlay is 1155 dollars, above the national 949 and Texas 922 averages.
Degree winner Me and Mrs Roy M Herod of 702 Old Lamesa Road watched their son Billy Mack Herod graduate today from Baylor University with a bachelor of science. He is a Baylor sophomore in the College of Dentistry in Dallas and affiliated with Delta Sigma Delta. He has been active in Alpha Phi Omega Sigma Delta Pi Beta Beta Beta Baylor Symphony and the Golden Wave bands.
The Terry County Mattress Company on Seagraves Road was sold this week to Mr and Mrs L M Green former Brownfield residents moving from Dumas. Seller Charlie Stockton. The Greens plan one day service furniture upholstering and bedding renovation.
Nominations for the Most Diversified Farmer in Terry County for 1958 total 13 with latest entries Lewis Harran and A D Wenzel both from Route 1. Nominations are accepted at Brownfield Chamber of Commerce, 414 West Main, through Aug 39.
Terry County residents eager to learn Morse Code are invited to a 7 20 p m meeting today with the Terry County Amateur Radio Club at North Fifth and Sixth. A class in amateur radio theory is also planned. For information call 3878 or 3039.

The Terry County ASC announced two key deadlines September 26 and October 17 for the Soil Bank Conservation Reserve. Farm payments will vary by land value and productivity, with a maximum 20 percent of land value per contract under national rules. Terry farms may see tailored max or nondiversion rates based on land offerings and years.
Funeral services for Vern Bridge 56 of 313 East Cardwell will be at 2 30 p m at Crescent Hill Church of Christ with Minister John McCoy officiating. He died at 1225 a m Wednesday in Tread away Daniell Hospital after about three months illness. He farmed near Tokio after arriving in Terry in 1921 and moved to Brownfield a year and a half ago. Burial in Terry County Memorial Cemetery directed by Brownfield Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife one son Ervin L Bridge of Tokio his parents Mr and Mrs H L Bridge of Spring Lake eight brothers Elmer of Lindrith NM Lyndon of Dinuba Calif Bennie of Weatherford Bailey of Lubbock Grady Ariand Paul and Gene all of Lancaster Calif and two grandchildren.
The 1958 59 school year starts Sept 1 for Union students with M G Gary entering his 12th year as superintendent. A faculty instruction meeting is set for Aug 30 at 9 am in the high school. Buses run Sept 1 and registration ends at noon that day. High school team includes Principal Glenn Mitchell and teachers H T Carr Bill Wall R K Sams John Gary and Mrs J O Burnett.
Wellman Public School plans a Sept 2 start for the 1958 59 session with new offerings a speech course and a 12 grade physical education program. Registration will be Sept 1 2 for high school students at the principal's office. About 220 elementary and 70 high school students expected. New faculty includes Mr Mrs E L Patton H E Stevens and others.
Mgr Doug Cox announced new swimming hours at Terry County Pool for the rest of the summer. Weekdays will run 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays 1 30 p.m. to 6 30 p.m. The pool will close August 31.
The South Plains Council announces the appointment of H. Shelby Berry as executive for Quanah Parker See No. 4. Berry steps into leadership as the council reorganizes youth scouting efforts in the region.
Football practice at Meadow will start at 7 a.m. Monday before classes resume Sept 1. Seniors register Monday and Tuesday in the principal’s office, while other students sign for classes Sept 1. Faculty meetings are set for Aug 25 at 9 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. School will be held all day Sept 1 and lunchrooms and buses operate normally.
ESA's Beta Theta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority resumes the Seleta Jane Brownfield Clubhouse event with a bridge meet set for September 9 from 1 30 p m to 4 30 p m.
Trice Production reports the No. 1 B A Sleeper wildcat 12 miles southeast of Brownfield tested at 10 975 to 11 018 feet in the Strawn formation but failed to surface oil or gas in two and a half hours. Recovery included 150 feet of free oil and 120 feet of oil and gas cut mud while formation pressure ranged 35 to 65 pounds per square inch. A prior Strawn test recovered 1 500 feet of gas and mud in 1 hour 35 minutes with pressures 610 to 645 pounds flowing. The well is about 15 miles north of Corrigan Field and 1 980 feet from the section lines in PSL survey.
The Rev. E. Salee Sanchez of Bryan will lead a revival at 7:30 p.m. starting August 25 at First Mexican Baptist Church on the Levelland Highway. The series runs through August 31 with daily services at the same time. Pastor L. T. Hernandez urges public attendance.
In Saturday's Democratic primary only two county offices and one state post are in balance. Absentee voting neared 92 by Tuesday's deadline with sites unchanged from July 26. Precincts span from the county clerk to Tokio and Park venues, as candidates seek victory to force a runoff for Place 1 on the Supreme Court.
Brownfield public schools expect 2,600 students on Sept 1 1958-59 with a prior high mark of 2380. Enrollment may rise most in the high school from about 500 to 565. Pre school teacher workshop Aug 25-28, student registrations Aug 29 and a mandatory birth certificate and vaccination proof accompany first grade enrollment.
