Meadow School System invites applications for its free and reduced price lunch program. Income guidelines determine eligibility, with example family sizes and monthly earnings. Applicants may obtain forms at the school office.
Brownfield Fire Department fought a three hour blaze in a two story home at 601 E Reppto starting 12 15 a m. The fire began in the basement, climbed the stairs, causing heavy damage to the basement and first floor while smoke filled the home. The stairway was burned and the cause is not yet known. Two local schools Meadow and Christian Center Academy will start Monday, with Brownfield Wellman and Union following on August 30.
Brownfield police reported a busy weekend with two shootings at Sam's Pool Hall and Janie's Place. Leon Israel Jr. faces aggravated assault charges after Sostenes Munoz was shot. Bertha Mae Campbell is charged after shooting Terri Flournoy. Other arrests include Daniel Cole Lewis on multiple felonies. Bonds set by Justice of the Peace.
The Brownfield Trade Development Committee led by Sandra Hinkle sponsors a Thursday long sidewalk sale with many Brownfield merchants. A $50 prize drawing will occur at 4 p.m. on the courthouse square. registration is at participating merchants. Merchants include Alco Discount, C R Anthony, Broadway Cleaners, Brownfield Automotive, Floral, News, Savings and Loan, State Bank, Carol Lee Donut Shop, and many more.
The 22nd Annual Terry County Old Settler's Reunion is set for August 28 at the American Legion Hall. James Martin serves as president of the organization.
Health officials confirm bubonic plague in a prairie dog town on a northwest Yoakum County ranch. No human cases reported. department swabbing prairie dog holes, posting plague notices, and alerting physicians. Hunters and trappers urged to take precautions due to flea transmission from infected animals.
Local residents have until Sept. 2 to submit nominations for Dryland Farmer of the Year Farm Family of the Year Agribusiness Man of the Year and Young Farmer of the Year. Nominations may be submitted at the Chamber of Commerce office or the Terry County Soil Conservation office.
Harold Jones, Brownfield water and sewer superintendent since 1970, heads five staff in maintaining 18 wells nine booster pumps and the city sewerage plant. He notes winter line breaks and spring pump repairs with a April 30 deadline, plus meter repairs and watering parks. Jones also serves as city fire marshal and longtime volunteer firefighter, WWII veteran.
