The City of Brownfield reported an August sales tax rebate of $70,486, lifting eight month rebates to $331,772, a 19 percent rise over the Jan-Aug period of 1981. Statewide local one-percent rebates run about 12 percent ahead of last year with city tallies shown.
Dr. Lee Baggett, a Southern Baptist medical missionary on furlough, opens a Brownfield office at 901 Tohoka Road for the coming year after 18 years serving in Guadiajara, Mexico. He arrived through Dr. Harlan Willis and other Rio Grande missionaries. Baggett hails from Vernon and is a Wayland Baptist College graduate.
The Wellman School Board meets in special session at 8 p.m. Monday to adopt the 1982-83 tax rate and budget and to amend the 1981-82 budget. The agenda also calls for an evaluation of the five year accreditation plan.
Brownfield School Board in a noon session approved hiring 10 teachers and set the 1982 83 tax rate ordinance. Superintendent Crandall Young said the hires bring staffing to full level for the year, with five more teachers than last year. New faculty and assignments include Alma R. Bird second grade Oak Grove 21 years Sam Houston State University Rollan Bird high school industrial arts 28 years Sam Houston State University Terri Cayton Cozart Oak Grove migrant resource teacher no experience Mc Murry College Leesa G. Herring middle school coach and science no experience Angelo State University Patricia Knight special education diagnostician 15 years Texas Tech University.
Season tickets for the Brownfield Cubs 1982 home football schedule are available in the high school principal’s office. Six home games cost 18 dollars, saving 1 dollar per game versus gate prices. gate tickets are 4 dollars for adults and 2 dollars for students, who may also buy in advance. The schedule includes Lamesa on Sept 10 and Denver City on Sept 24 with Lubbock listed as well.
