Trustees To Consider 1983 School Tax Rate

The Brownfield School Board will meet in regular session to set the 1982-83 levy at 51.5 cents per $100, a 1.5 cent rise. The rate funds maintenance and debt service with expected $2,836,038 from local taxes, state funds $3,614,536, and miscellaneous revenue. Tax notices go out before Sept 1 with discounts for early payment and a Jan 31, 1983 deadline. The board will review accreditation, consider cafeteria price hikes, hire 10 new faculty, and accept two resignations.

Confederate Air Force to stage Panhandle air show at Terry County

The Panhandle West Texas Squadron of the Confederate Air Force plans an air show at Terry County Airport on August 28. Local residents will have a chance to see World War II type vintage aircraft that will have been restored and flown in demonstrations.

Brownfield Police raid nets beer cache and show planes

Brownfield police seized a large cache of beer during a raid at five residences on North 1st and Main Streets. The raid, with 152 cans of beer and 22 pints of liquor confiscated, occurred over a three day period with no public intoxication arrests. A Panhandle-West Texas air show at the airport will display about fifty planes, including a rare AML restored by the squadron and several wartime bombers and fighters. Admission is five dollars for adults, free for under 12.

Reward Offered for Break-In at 910 E Broadway

The Brownfield Crime Line, Inc. offers 300 dollars for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the burglar or burglars in a residence burglary at 910 E Broadway. Entry was gained by removing a screen and entering through a bedroom window. No items were reported missing. The burglary occurred between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday August 6, 1982.

Terry County Grand Jury Indicts Eight

The Terry County Grand Jury met in summer session Thursday and handed down eight indictments for various offenses. Floyd Reed faces aggravated rape charges for forcing a Brownfield woman to have relations by threat on August 2. Timothy Gregg Kirby is indicted for theft in amounts from 200 to 10,000 dollars, with multiple alleged appropriations in early August 1981. Gregory Ray Finney is charged with burglary for entering Linda Salazar’s building on July 9, 1982. Christopher P. Waitman is indicted for theft for a May 10, 1982 incident involving a 25 inch color TV. David Pina Martinez faces a theft charge in the same filing. The section ends with “See Grand Jury” on Page 4.

Brownfield Receives Pedestrian Safety Citation

Brownfield earned the Pedestrian Safety Citation from the Panhandle Plains Auto Club for preventing pedestrian fatalities and injuries and for outstanding pedestrian safety programs. The award is among 287 top citations from AAA clubs in the 43rd annual Pedestrian Protection Program, with over 2,790 cities and 29 states participating in the prior year survey.
