More than 100 Terry athletes are expected to answer the call Monday as first gridiron activities are authorized by the Texas Interscholastic League. Four teams Brownfield Wellman Meadow and Union are set to begin preparations for the pigskin season.
The U S Census Bureau reports Terry County has a gross assessed property value of 32 729 000, yielding 2 196 per person in tax base. National average is 1 627, with 1 024 in the West South Central region and 1 627 nationally. Only 86.0 percent of assessed property is used for realty tax base, notes Texas 73.0 percent. The remainder funds personal and state property taxes as rates vary widely across communities. The article also previews Otis Holladay and coach Harvey Tubbs leading Wellman Wildcats with four starters back for 1959 season.
Karnes County mentions Jewel E. Smith Bryant earning Artesia N M teaching, Sul Ross College graduates, Brownfield Kiwanis Hypnodrama Sept 24 at BHS auditorium with 1 and 50 cents. The schedule lists theater showings, ship cruise return, ACC summer commencement, and a Social Security site.
A state run bookmobile serves Brownfield and Terry County and nearby areas every three weeks with over two thousand books, records, and 16 mm films. New principal Frank Odom outlines registration for juniors and seniors on August 25 and sophomores and freshmen on August 26. He arrives from Miami after three years as superintendent. Faculty for 1959-60 is complete and classes start August 31.

An immunization clinic will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 30 p.m. Wednesday at the South Plains Health Department.
Terry County commissioners noted all county owned vehicles now display identifications per the new state law. The court also approved an $8,500 bid from West Texas Equipment for a No. 12 Caterpillar motor grader with 300 hours used, and accepted $26,600 state gasoline tax funds for lateral road maintenance. The session opened with routine approvals and adjourned to page 5.
Farmers in Terry County will receive ballots by mail next week to elect nine community ASC committeemen for the 1960 program. Ballots must be returned to Love Miller by Sept. 4 and tabulated Sept. 7 by George Hudspeth Curtis Hulse and Grady Davis, with chairmen chosen from the top vote-getters in each community.

The Terry County singing convention meets at 2 30 p m today in the Church of God at Third and Cardwell. President G M Thomason of 620 East Main invites the public to attend.
