Terry Athletes-100 Strong-Answer Call Monday for Pigskin Season

More than 100 Terry athletes are expected to answer the call Monday as first gridiron activities are authorized by the Texas Interscholastic League. Four teams Brownfield Wellman Meadow and Union are set to begin preparations for the pigskin season.

County Property Tax Base Per Capita Falls in Texas

The U S Census Bureau reports Terry County has a gross assessed property value of 32 729 000, yielding 2 196 per person in tax base. National average is 1 627, with 1 024 in the West South Central region and 1 627 nationally. Only 86.0 percent of assessed property is used for realty tax base, notes Texas 73.0 percent. The remainder funds personal and state property taxes as rates vary widely across communities. Bookmobile Demonstration Expands Rural Library Access

A state run bookmobile serves Brownfield and Terry County and nearby areas every three weeks with over two thousand books, records, and 16 mm films. Patrons register for a number and have three week checkouts with no limit on books. The program promotes reading among school-age children and teens with certificates after set totals.

Bookmobile Visits Terry County with 2000 Titles

Henry Heard operates the traveling library which will serve Terry patrons until May 1960. The unit carries about 2,000 titles and stops every three weeks in the county. In the column Easily Digested this week the schedule for the Bookmobile is listed.

Wellman High Sets Registration Dates for 1959 60

New principal Frank Odom outlines registration for juniors and seniors on August 25 and sophomores and freshmen on August 26. He arrives from Miami after three years as superintendent. Faculty for 1959-60 is complete and classes start August 31.

County Vehicle Markings Highlight New State Law

Terry County commissioners noted all county owned vehicles now display identifications per the new state law. The court also approved an $8,500 bid from West Texas Equipment for a No. 12 Caterpillar motor grader with 300 hours used, and accepted $26,600 state gasoline tax funds for lateral road maintenance. The session opened with routine approvals and adjourned to page 5.

Farmers to vote by mail for 1960 ASC committeemen

Farmers in Terry County will receive ballots by mail next week to elect nine community ASC committeemen for the 1960 program. Ballots must be returned to Love Miller by Sept. 4 and tabulated Sept. 7 by George Hudspeth Curtis Hulse and Grady Davis, with chairmen chosen from the top vote-getters in each community.
