Brownfield Guard Seeks 35 Recruits for Full Strength

Brownfield National Guard unit plans to enlist 35 new soldiers to raise manning from 63 to 98. Capt. Fred Adams says authorization allows 100 percent strength with six month active duty for new enlistees. Recruitment targets youths under 18. City Golf Finals Set After Qualifying at Brownfield

The 1959 City Golf Tournament at Brownfield Country Club began this week with qualifying rounds. Entry is five dollars and rounds may be played anytime. Championship flight qualifiers are named Sunday with pairings posted tonight. Finals occur August 23 with eight-player flights and awards for medalist, flight champions, runners-up, and consolation winners.

Union Students to Begin 1959 60 Year August 31

Union Independent School opens at 9 a.m. August 31 for the 1959 60 term. Buses run as usual that day but cafeteria lunch starts the following day. Opening sessions end at noon. Names of teachers will be released later.

Odell Wilkes Hired as Meadow Superintendent

Odell Wilkes of Sudan was hired last Thursday as Meadow schools superintendent. A high school principal for nine years at Sudan, Wilkes will assume duties this week and Mrs Wilkes will teach fourth grade. The Meadow board notes three more teachers are needed for first second and eighth grades.

Turner Joins Lubbock Police Department

Bobby R. Turner of 117 North will move to Lubbock and join the Lubbock Police Department. He served four years in the U S Air Force as a cryptograph operator and completed criminal and civil law courses on August 7.

Brownfield Kiwanis wins top Division 7 July rating with 93 of 100 points amid competition from Downtown and Hub City clubs plus Tulsa Hereford Plainview Levelland. Ellington says members prepare for Oct. district convention in Galveston and a Sept. 24 two hour show Hypnodrama at the high school auditorium to fund a dental care program for elementary students.

Brownfield Council Reports 43 Miles of Paved Streets

The Brownfield City Council, in its August session, notes 43 miles of paved streets in the city per City Engineer M R Smith. They compare favorably to Lubbock, with Brownfield’s population far smaller, and plan to attend the Texas League of Municipalities meeting in Dallas.

No Injuries Reported In Two Car Collision Here

About 200 dollars in damages resulted when two cars collided Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Lubbock and Tohoka highways. Drivers were Larkin J. Qualls of Lamesa and Carl Raymond Mussick of 415 North Second. Neither was injured. Police said Mussick’s car sustained about 150 dollars of damage and Qualls’ about 50 dollars. The mishap occurred about 1 p.m.
