Brownfield merchants and the NEWS announce a three day Sunny Days program starting Monday with a city wide treasure hunt. The NEWS will publish the hunt key in Sunday’s edition and mail complete details to subscribers to ensure participation across postal routes.
Trustees approved a 916345 budget for Brownfield Independent School District extending Sept 1 1958 to Aug 31 1959. The tax rate rises to 165 per 100 valuation with 128 for local maintenance and 37 to meet debts. Major spending includes 606000 for instruction and 47500 administration. Revenue sources total 565000 local taxes 348000 state funds and 1500 county funds.
W H Wheatley of Route 3 and Kenneth Purtell of 1214 East Main were elected to boards of Poka Lambro and Lyntegar rural cooperatives at Tahoka’s annual meeting. Wheatley was re elected secretary of Poka Lambro Telephone Co op.
A telegram from U.S. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson to Chamber of Commerce manager Joe Satterwhite reports $113,000 released by the National Guard Bureau for the Brownfield armory construction. The Texas Adjutant General will proceed to finalize the construction contract.

Terry County Commissioners Court votes 3 to 2 to reconfigure downtown parking by removing north and south sides of the courthouse square. Estimated cost about 10 000 dollars. Plan calls for 121 head in spaces with sidewalk preserved on both sides and remaining trees. Local business leaders present praise the move as a boost to downtown commerce. Dennis Q. Lilly speaks for the coalition representing major firms around the square. See No 4, page 5.
San Pat Vegetable Company sets up a six week packing shed near Plains for cantaloupes grown by E A Smyer. About 25 workers pack and 40 pick. fruit graded in field and shed then washed waxed and sorted into choice and hard ripe for shipments.
County agent Jim Foy warns bollworms threaten Terry county cotton and urges farmers to inspect the top three inches of plants now. He cites 50 fields with about 90 percent needing immediate poisoning and cautions that waiting risks major crop damage.
Delivered Monday by Lee A. Winningham of Meadow to Goodpasture Grain, Terry’s first load of 1958 grain sorghum, earning a $100 award. Weighed at 12 940 pounds, the hybrid sorghum tested 17 percent moisture and state authorities called it possibly a record early harvest. Grady Goodpasture noted it is much earlier than the average year.
County Agent Jim Foy says farmers can file for a federal gasoline tax refund of three cents per gallon for fuel used in producing or harvesting farm or ranch products. Refunds cover fuel from July 1, 1957, to June 30, 1958 and must be filed by September 30 at the District Director IRS in Austin or Dallas. contact the county agent's office for questions.

Strip the Chihuahua owned by Dennis Dillon won best of show at the Ken Station Kid's Amateur Dog Show held Saturday week ago at Piggly Wiggly. Dennis Dillon's brother Max assisted. Spot owned by David Brown won largest dog, most spots, and longest tail. Other winners included Marcia Adams for best trick, Lee Greenfield's Poochie for best costume, with entries from Betty Josey Hazel Purtell Pamela Parrott Claudene Blake Linda Martindale Lynda Geron Judy Wolf Kathy Hill and Manuel Reyna.
The Terry County Commissioners Court authorized new parking on the north and south sides of Brownfield’s courthouse square. Final construction will ease downtown congestion, adding 121 spaces while preserving the square’s restfulness. County Judge Herb Chesshir emphasized cooperation as the city grows.
Seventeen graduates gathered for a Meadow reunion at Coleman Park on Saturday. Attendees included Don and Jackie Pendergrass and daughter Bettie, plus many classmates and relatives from Meadow and surrounding towns such as Lubbock, Brownfield, Big Spring, Plainview, and Woodville Oklahoma.
Mr and Mrs Aubrey Pur year were in Austin over the weekend to attend his family reunion.
A school of instruction for PTA leaders will be held at 3 p.m. today in South Plains Health Unit. Mrs P R Cates District 14 vice president will lead and urges elected officers and committee chairmen to attend.
The Wise County Old Settlers Reunion will be held all day Sunday Aug. 17 at Mackenzie State Park in Lubbock. Attendees are asked to bring a basket lunch and gather east of the swimming pool.
