Brownfield Students Face Back-To-School Registration Rush

Brownfield area prepares for the 1986-87 school year with multiple campuses opening Sept. 2. Registration schedules vary by school from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2 and require birth certificates and immunization records. Teachers hold in-service sessions Aug. 22 and Aug. 25-26.

Terry County Old Settlers Reunion Scheduled for Aug 23

Terry County residents with 40 years in the area will gather for the 26th Old Settlers Reunion at the American Legion Hall next Saturday August 23. Registration begins at 9 am with a $2 fee, followed by a noon potluck meal provided meat tea bread and coffee by the Terry County Pioneer Association. A program and memorial service cap the day. The event will honor the oldest man and woman present the longest‑married couple and the farthest traveler. Last year drew 280 attendees. Concurrently the 1936 graduating class plans a reception at 7 pm August 22 at Seleta Jane Clubhouse and a dinner at BHS commons at 6 pm August 23.

BRMC directors approve 9.8307 cent tax rate for 1987

Terry Memorial Hospital District votes a two part 9.8307 cent tax rate to raise about 494000 dollars. Administrator Pat McMillan cites DRG cost shifts, oil price drops, and higher insurance as pressures. Board notes revenue from ER and austerity across 22 area hospitals, with audit available at the hospital.

Harvest Festival Queens Sell Tickets for Oct 4 Event

Five Harvest Festival queen contestants began selling tickets to fund the October 4 celebration. Tickets cost 1 and will be available until festival day. Contestants include Allison Dyess Kiwanis Bobbi Hartman Shay Moore Debbie Fletcher Holly Edwards. Queen mother is Tresa West.

Commissioners approve handicap chair lift bid

The Terry County Commissioners approved a bid of 16,190 from a San Antonio firm to install a handicap chair lift to the basement stairs. The bid was accepted on the condition the lift receive federal use approval. A public hearing on the 1987 budget and revenue sharing funds followed, with the budget based on 20 cents per $100 valuation and oil at 27 dollars per barrel. Receipts are expected to drop from 1986 to 1987, and the Aug. 18 session will vote on the tax rate and budget.

Brownfield unit seeks volunteers for Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train

The Brownfield fifth military police group of the Texas State Guard asks civilian volunteers to assist in security for the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train visit in Brownfield September 6 through 8. A planning meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. August 25 at the National Guard Armory. contact Maj. Don McWhorter or Sgt. Robert Mayfield for information.

Terry County Farm nominations open for annual awards

Nominations are being accepted for the Terry County Agricultural Awards to be presented after the farm tour on Sept. 18. Four awards will be given: Young Farmer of the Year, Agribusinessman of the Year, Dryland Farmer of the Year, and Farm Family of the Year. Nominations can be made at the Terry County Soil and Water Conservation District office or the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce office.
