Recent rains and sunny days spur a surge in weed growth, aiding weed vigor and complicating field management for local farmers as the crop season advances. Strong moisture followed by warmth fuels rapid weed emergence and spread in multiple counties, challenging control efforts.
Brownfield city officials appeal to all property owners to help control a growing weed problem. They urge timely maintenance, reporting of overgrowth, and adherence to local weed abatement rules to protect neighborhoods and public spaces.
A local column opens with a vignette about growing weeds and then outlines the city's weed ordinance. It requires property owners to keep weeds under 12 inches on their property and adjacent rights of way. Code Enforcement will issue notices with a 10 day correction period before penalties. Violators face up to 200 dollars per day plus costs to fix the problem.
The 121st Judicial District Court of Terry County issued 12 indictments on Aug 8. Named defendants include Antonio Garza for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, James Montano for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, Gabriel Garza for delivery of a controlled substance over 4 oz, Preston York for burglary of a habitation, Boyce Roarke and Marcus McNutt for theft over $750 and under $20,000, Victor Martinez for bail jumping, Gordon Gilbert for theft, Stacy Timmons for theft, Johnny Soto Rocha for driving while intoxicated, and Janie Ledesma for aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon.
Brownfield City Council approved a 0.5040 effective rate to take effect Oct 1 after a sharp drop in commercial property values. The rate aims to generate about 725,550 to match last year's city budget of 726,091, with commercial owners paying slightly more and stores possibly less. The council also amended the noise ordinance amid 82 complaints since January.
The council approved the Appraisal District budget amid discussion of enforcement methods. Officials noted warnings in most cases and emphasized police backup for complaints. McGowan and Fletcher supported signed complaints to ensure effectiveness. Since 1980 Brownfield has allowed the appraisal office to handle taxes for about $22,000 yearly, replacing prior independent tax collection by each entity. See Rate page 2.
The Terry Memorial Hospital District board meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the Brownfield Regional Medical Center meeting room to discuss an emergency juvenile shelter plan and a proposed budget. U.S. Rep. Larry Combest will hold a town hall Friday at 10 a.m. in the Brownfield High School Commons and address the Brownfield Rotary Club luncheon at noon at the Party House.
Voter Registrar Ann Willis warns nearly a thousand county residents may be struck from voter lists for not updating cards. Cards returned to the courthouse reflect wrong or changed addresses. To vote in the Nov 6 election, eligibility requires registration by Oct 5 or updating status now.
Frank Webb a former Terry County resident recounts his abrupt move from Kuwait City as Iraqi troops invaded. He rushed from the Ahmad al Ahmad oilfield site after a jet bombing near an international HQ. Webb followed embassy advisories to stay indoors and avoid roads as CNN provided updates.
