The region confronts a difficult decision on where to vote with Governor Mark White's influence. The Republican slate features Kent Hance, praised for dedication and local outreach, while the Democratic ballot highlights Gerald McCathern, a farmer advocate with broad agricultural support.
Polls open at 7 a.m. Saturday in Terry County for 1986 party primaries to select candidates for November. Twelve Democratic and six Republican boxes will serve voters from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Major races include county judge, commissioner precinct two, four contested races, tax assessor-collector, and several unopposed Democratic and Republican county offices. Governor race features Mark White and five challengers on the Democratic side and Kent Hance, Bill Clements, and Tom Loeffler on the Republican side. Combest faces no Republican challenger. At a special 7 a.m. session Brownfield Mayor Tommy Hicks swore in Bob Davis as the Brownfield City Council's seventh member. Davis was elected by the council during Thursday's regular session and will serve a one year term as the government body's second at large member.
Brownfield Middle School Red Express earned unanimous I ratings in both concert and sightreading at UIL contests in Frenship on Saturday, completing a year with a Sweepstake Award for marching last fall. Directed by Willie Hintze, the band performed a march, two concert numbers, and sight reading, then received praise for maturity and attention to fundamentals.
Terry County commissioners moved to advertise for bids to remodel the Texas Department of Human Resources building at 101 N D St. The fire on Feb 9 destroyed the structure, which housed the Human Resources Health and Mental Health departments. The agencies have been relocated to the east wing of Brownfield Regional Medical Center.
Republican gubernatorial hopeful Kent Hance will land at the Terry County airport at 2 15 p m Friday for a West Texas swing. He touts his bid as the race’s best chance to defeat Mark White while stressing he is the only candidate who can win the primary.
The Brownfield Noon Lions Tournament of Talent Show, held last Thursday and Friday at the BMS Auditorium, will be rebroadcast on Landmark Cablevision channel 19 at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Brownfield Business Association launches its second Super Saturday around the downtown square this Saturday. It is sponsored again by the association and will feature entertainment on the square with prizes.
The NEWS presents statements from five of six contested races in Terry County including County Judge candidates Herbert Chesshir and Darwin Cargill and other races. A Democratic Congressional candidate Gerald McCarthen is profiled, with no reply from Mary Nell Mathis. The edition includes sample ballots and a full day of entertainment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring acts by Dolly and Porter, Chris Miller Band, Tumbling T's, Brownfield New Horizon Singers, Stryffe, and Terry Twirlers, plus local business participation in the Super Saturday event.
