Six hundred sixty-four Terry county first and second graders got their first Salk polio vaccine shots Friday. Second shots will be given Friday May 6. Children absent last Friday will receive their first shot on the 6th and the second shot later. Forty six
Volunteers from Brownfield PTA and Health Unit staff inoculated first and second graders amid cheers and ice cream treats. Photos show students and helpers, including Mrs. Theola Wheeler and Dr. K E Johnson, as the 664 children received shots without incident.
Over 126 district firemen and families attended the association meeting on Saturday with races at the high school grounds, a barbecue, and a dance. Brownfield served as host and was ineligible for races. Activities moved from the Fire Department to the Brownfield Country Club with speeches by Mayor C. Priam and Judge Herb Chesshir. Towns represented included Denver City, Wink, Alpine, Fort Stockton, College Station, Crane, Midland, Monahans, Kermit, Odessa, Jal, and N. M.
Three calls reached by firemen produced little damage. A grass fire near the Orr dairy barn on South Eighth began to spread before firefighters arrived at 2:35 p.m. Wednesday but was contained. A cutting torch sparked a gas tank at J. B. Knight Snplement Co. Monday morning with light damage. A pit fire on the Western Grain Co. elevator during unloading Monday morning caused minimal harm.
Despite temporary discomfort, 664 boys and girls in Terry County move closer to immunity from a paralysis threat as vaccination efforts continue.

Terry County prepares its initial summer YMCA recreation program with a ten part lineup including swimming tennis golf volleyball folk games photography leather tooling radio archery and art. The plan aims for June and July with a $1 000 budget, $750 still needed after $250 from the county and ongoing director recruitment led by Mrs J M Teague Jr and Herb Chesshir. Col Dan Pitt will attend meetings as YMCA area representative.
Terry County Maid of Cotton contest rules set ages 16 to 23 and residency in Terry county. Contestants must wear cotton attire and be judged on appearance beauty and poise during Cotton Week on May 24. Only the first 15 entries eligible. entries submitted to News Herald office. prizes include 135, 10 and 5 in cotton merchandise.
Funeral services were held for E B McBurnett Sr a Brownfield businessman who managed Shamburger Lumber Co since 1944 The service at First Baptist Church was led by Dr A A Brian and Rev Jones Weathers Burial was at Terry County Memorial Cemetery Brownfield Funeral Home directed the arrangements He was born in Montana in 1901 and died after a lengthy illness He is survived by his wife a son Ki B Jr a daughter Ann one grandchild and two sisters Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were listed without further detail
