Three new councilmen Jim Reed Bill Marchbanks and Odell Sears were sworn in by Mayor Jack Hamilton after the April 6 election to replace Sammy Jones Lloyd Hahn and Truett Flache. Alton Webb was elected mayor pro tem. Voters numbered 827 in a competitive race for three seats.
Light showers Thursday gave Brownfield and surrounding areas the first rain in five months, followed by a late day thunderstorm and tornado watch.Official gauges ranged from .3 to 1.4 inches across Brownfield, Union, Meadow, Wellman, and nearby farms, with Lamesa and Tahoka also recording rain.
Brownfield city planner Nathan Kiser presented the comprehensive plan focusing on parks and facilities. He noted land gifted by the Post Montgomery Estate on North 14th Street could become a bird and animal farm with pheasants quail and other game birds hatched and raised for sale or donation to farms. The park would involve two youth groups with Boy Scouts and Future Farmers assisting in initial planting and development.
Brownfield teachers will take part in a week long in service program from Monday to Friday as announced by W O Caraway superintendent Students receive a week long vacation during the period The program starts at 830 am with teachers gathering in the Oak Grove for coffee and doughnuts then dispersing to schools Elementary teachers attend Why Man Creates at the Little Theater High and middle school staff hold joint meetings Wednesday features Dr W C Newberry of Southwest Texas State University who will present workshops on Human Relations and The Teacher
Randy Dyess, a former Terry County resident and local farmer, was found dead on a ranch near Aspermont around 5 p.m. Thursday. Sheriff Homer Parker said foul play is suspected and the body is in Abilene for pathologist examination.
Donors and recipients of Texas Tech University Foundation scholarships will be honored at a Sunday 3 to 5 p.m. reception in the University Center Ballroom. Special plaques will recognize three longtime supporters: J. O. Gillham, John A. Hughes, and Roscoe Wilson, all of Lubbock. Don Dorman, foundation committee chair, will preside and present around 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend this second annual event. Approximately 250 donors and 600 recipients are involved.
Terry County joins nationwide and state observances for National Library Week with a proclamation by County Judge W. T. McKinney and library director Mrs. M. J. Craig Jr. The theme is Youve Got A Right to Read Dont Blow It and the library reports rising local use, especially by youth during school vacations. The Kendrick Memorial Library houses over 16 000 volumes, offers interlibrary loans, and has a Nancy Drew set added this year. Residents are invited to visit and explore available educational aids even without a formal celebration.
