Brownfield Boys Girls Dominate District 3-3A Tennis Title

Brownfield wins the District 3-3A boys, girls and overall titles for the sixteenth straight year at the district tournament in Brownfield. Seven players advance to regionals, led by top doubles Lawlis Willis and the Dodd Hope duo, plus singles entrant Sharla Blay. The No. 2 doubles pair upset the top seed in a dramatic final.

Cub boys linksters win District 3-3A crown

Brownfield’s Dic kie Faught earns first district title as his linksters post a 1 331 total at Post. Britt Patton leads Brownfield with 75 as Seminole trails by more than 30 strokes. Brownfield tops 1 363 for second, securing district glory for the program.

Brownfield Girls Golf Takes District Runner-Up Pace

Brownfield High School girls golf finished second in District 3-3A despite not posting the top score in the final round at Brownfield Country Club. Seminole won with 1 543 total. Brownfield’s 1 729 placed them second and earns a regional berth in Odessa on April 27. Becky Chaffin led Brownfield with 102, Tamara Timmons 106, Leslie Garcia 107, Sandra Morin 133, Laura Proctor 124, as winds and cold weather kept scores modest but team effort strong.

The Brownfield Business Association plans a Saturday event dropping three colored ping pong balls from an airplane. Yellow balls grant 15 percent discounts, lavender 20 percent, and red 25 percent at BBA member stores. Drops at 10 a.m. with redemption by April 25 and a $100 prize drawing on April 28.

Commissioners update petition to close Union School

Terry County commissioners met in regular session Monday approving a one year contract renewal with AID Ambulance serving Brownfield and Terry County since April 1, 1986. The $93,867 annual funding is shared by Brownfield, Terry County and the Terry Memorial Hospital District. Aid will receive up to 10,000 from each body for a new ambulance. The board also heard a petition by Joe Roy Golden with 21 names to begin abolishing the Union School District and noted the required threshold for an election.

Sunday shoot out wounds policeman and two others

Leroy Demps is jailed in Terry County on attempted capital murder charges after a Sunday night shootout at a Brownfield residence. Officer Ramon Golden and Sgt Brian Rice were wounded, and Demps’ 11 year old daughter Sheila was also hit by a fragment. The incident began with a burglary report.

Hospital Board approves space for WPS office

The Terry Memorial Hospital District Board voted to provide office space at the hospital for Women's Protective Services after a presentation by Kay Huckabee. She noted WPS aids victims of spouse abuse and dependents, with a grant since March supporting a program for Terry and Hockley counties.
