Thefts and Vandalism Burden Local Law Enforcers

Local police and the Sheriff's Department report a spate of break-ins theft and vandalism. Arrests include Joe Eddy Fulbright William Allison Conner Julian R Charles and Francisco T Villegas with fines bonds and jail stays varying by case. Additional minors and adults face liquor law violations and DWI charges. A West Ward School break-in and two shop incidents yielded recovered money and damaged vending machines. The period also included two vehicle collisions involving several drivers.

Brownfield Chamber Committees Hold Early 1966 Meetings

The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce opened its year with two of ten committees meeting. The Public Affairs Committee, led by Ray Anderson, discussed legislative letters and town hall meetings to aid citizens, planning a letter to Congress on the minimum wage. The Highway and Transportation Committee, chaired by Jim Reed, reviewed Highway 385 and 82 activities, traffic flow, light timing, and a Brownfield transportation study for prospective industries.

Services Set For Mrs Dollie Adair

Funeral services for Mrs Dollie Adair 69 are set for 3 p.m. Thursday in the Wellman High School Auditorium with Homer Jones of the Wellman Church of Christ officiating Burial will be in Brownfield Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction Mrs Adair died at 1230 a.m. today in Brownfield General Hospital after a long illness She was a native of Leon County moving to Terry County in 1924 and settled in Wellman She was a member of the Wellman Church of Christ Survivors include four sons Elmo Sam and C all of Wellman and Art of Brownfield one sister Mrs L P Glover of Mexia 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

New Cotton Bill Aims at Research and Promotion

House Agriculture Committee advanced H. R. 12322 by Chairman Harold D. Cooley to fund a cotton research and promotion program with a $1 per bale assessment. The plan requires a two thirds referendum approval and offers refunds to nonparticipants with safeguards and area based handler designations. Cooley aims to bring the bill to the House soon.

Inflation costs Terry County residents last year

Inflation reduced the local purchasing power by about 145 per family in the past year. The average dollar was worth about 2 cents less, with food up 4.5 percent, transportation 4 percent, and services 2.5 percent. Total local inflation cost reached 723000 for the community, affecting fixed incomes more than other earnings.

Wellman ISD trustee vote yields split 26 ballots each

Ballots canvassing the Wellman Independent School trustee race show R. G. Herron and Burke Slaughter tied at 26 votes apiece. The court approved tire purchase for Sheriff Homer Parker’s car at 50 dollars and authorized 40.80 for Fred Tucker’s Police Identification School expenses in Austin. Commissioners OK'd 210 for a chair and adding machine for the Tax Assessor-Collector's office. A road waiver for Precinct 4 on the Thompson Estate was ordered with authority to open the road. Judge Simms may take April 22 to 28 as vacation. A 5600 transfer from the Road and Bridge Highway Fund allocated 1400 to each commissioner precinct fund.

Brownfield Joins West Texas Sparkle City Contest

Brownfield is among 57 West Texas towns in Operation Sparkle a two year program by the West Texas Chamber of Commerce to attract visitors and encourage longer stays. The effort runs 1966 through 1967 with Brownfield landscaping the chamber yard as the first step and garden clubs aiding the project.

Births Outnumber Deaths In Terry County March Totals

Terry County recorded 25 births and 10 deaths in March. Males accounted for 15 births to 10 female births. The year totals reached 98 births and 34 deaths. Heart disease led deaths with three, followed by cancer and several other causes. One fetal death was listed.

New Child Welfare Licensing Worker Named in South Plains

Rosemary Holcomb named the new Child Welfare Licensing Worker at the South Plains Health Unit replacing Carolyn Williams who resigned to marry. She earned a Texas Tech degree in May 1965 and completed welfare training in Austin in February. The program licenses day care facilities to meet minimum state standards for child protection. Brownfield lists seven licensed centers and inquiries can be made to the Child Welfare Licensing Office at 637-6878. Babysitting by the hour or at night is not covered by the law.
