Kenny Kendrick a Southern Methodist University student and son of Mr and Mrs John Kendrick was injured in an unprovoked assault as he and friends left a rock n roll show at Dallas Memorial Auditorium. He was stabbed in the chest and beaten while his companions escaped with minor injuries and sought police aid. He was treated at Baylor Memorial Hospital and is reported to be recovering well.
Brownfield voters will choose a new mayor and two councilmen for two year terms at City Hall from 8 am to 7 pm. All three candidates are unopposed: C. E. Ross for mayor, L. J. Richardson and W K Lindsey for council, while current Mayor Jess McWherter cannot seek reelection. Poll tax or exemption proof is required to vote.
Brownfield Consolidated Independent School District voters elected three trustees. John McFarland won Place 3 with 225 votes, defeating Bill Davis who had 111. Incumbents Billie Moore and James Thurman kept Place 1 and Place 2 with 318 and 323 votes respectively. Write ins. A canvass meeting is set for 7 a.m. Monday in the high school cafeteria.
A light turnout of Terry County voters elected school trustees for Wellman Union and Meadow communities. At Wellman 30 votes were cast with incumbents Robert Hamm and Glen Baker re-elected amid write-in votes for other candidates.
March building permits in Brownfield totaled 184 050 dollars, nearly doubling February. Major portion 142 350 dollars came from 11 permits for Willie Helms residences on S Lons and nearby streets. Other notable permits included St Anthony's tile parish hall 10 000 dollars and a 4 000 dollar commercial building for Harry Gobel.
Meadow voters head to polls Tuesday to elect a new mayor and two city council seats. Balloting runs 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cotton Producers Gun Office with G. B. Jones as judge and Mrs. Larue Brooks as clerk. Four men seek the council posts Albert Bayer D S Carrol John George and Louis Peeler. top two win two-year terms. Incumbents J Brooks Dan Roberts and Jak Benson hold one year left. Mayor T E Verner does not seek re-election. Verner has 34 years in Meadow with 20 in public service. Voters must hold a poll tax receipt or exemption, be Texas residents for at least one year, and Meadow residents for six months.
Mrs W F Rt reports a license plate CD2672 stolen from her car while parked at the bowling lanes Tuesday night. Police say a half a tank of gasoline was siphoned from a parked car Thursday night. Terry County Sheriff reports two arrests on school attendance warrants. Minor accidents: Wednesday at Island Broadway involved a 1957 Plymouth and a 1964 Rambler causing $40 damage to the Rambler. Friday afternoon a 1962 Chrysler and a 1962 Buick sustained minor damage.
Brownfield City Council approved bids for a 1964 Bel Aire police cruiser from Charles Paul Chevrolet and a 10 horsepower turbine pump from Peerless Pump of Lubbock. A bleacher project at the high school ballpark was rejected due to traffic vision hazards and city ordinances. Other bids for an air compressor were read but action deferred.
March rainfall was below normal with 0.41 inch recorded by KTRY versus a 0.59 inch average. Snow, rain and a trace on March 9 19 and 20 contributed to the deficit. Temperatures ranged from 78 to 25 degrees. last killing frost expected mid April. Local officials discussed sidewalk obstruction ordinances and city improvements as council actions included easements, road work, and warrants.
