Deadline Set for Democratic Primary Filing in Hempstead

W H Betts announces June 17 1950 as the filing deadline for Democratic primary candidates. A Democratic Executive Committee meeting will be held June 19 in Hempstead District Courtroom at 2 30 p m to determine ballot order filing costs and election procedures. Will Adams and Lawrence Dutch Hammerling are local party chairs in Brookshire and Pattison respectively.

Ann Wilkinson Wins Four Year Scholarship

Ann Wilkinson daughter of Mr and Mrs Leroy Wilkinson of Katy won a four year scholarship to Southwestern University Georgetown Texas on June 6. Since 1942 the ex students association of Southwestern University has awarded four scholarships yearly based on competitive exams given at the University near the first of June to interested high school graduates.

Pattison assumes league lead with wins over Waller and North Katy

Pattison defeated North Katy 14-3 to take the Brookshire Lions League lead after beating Waller 12-9 earlier. Monaville handed Waller a second league loss, rallying from 7-3 after four innings to win 10-7. Other notes mention Emma Glick’s visit, rabies film showings by the Addicks Barker club, dog vaccination plans, a pie supper, and a Home Demonstration Club meeting with a French Shorts lesson.

Zwahr and Helwig Sworn In As Ft. Bend County Officials

Fred Zwahr, former four year sheriff, won the top post in a runoff by 684 votes, totaling 2 706 to 2 072 for Alva Cap McGill. Ed H. Helwig will serve as commissioner from Precinct 4 after defeating D R Daniel Jr 355 to 259. The Brookshire Business and Professional Women's Club met at Mrs Louise Gra's home with guest speaker Nelson from the State Health and Safety Department urging a citywide cleanup campaign.

Booster League at Katy Draws Large Crowd

About fifty men played in the Booster League softball practice last Monday night. A large crowd of fans cheered their favorite players as one Sr. team led 15 to 5 before losing 19 to 18. Katy invites all men to play ball this summer with weather permitting on Mondays and Fridays.

Funeral Held For Mrs Payton at Woodlawn Cemetery

Funeral Services Held For Mrs W D Poorman

Funeral services for Mrs W D Poorman 78 were held at Katy Methodist Church with Rev Wm Davis officiating. Interment followed at Magnolia Cemetery Katy. Survivors include husband W D Poorman a daughter Mae Allen two sons James Eugene and Herschal Poorman six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She died Sunday June 4 in Galveston after months of illness.

Youths Arrested In Rhodes Slaying Case

Two former pipeline workers tied to Wad Rhodes construction at Jourdanton confessed to entering Rhodes trailer at Hockley and beating him with a broom handle and stealing 45 dollars. V Raymond Shaw of Chicago and Arthur Henry Jung of Indianapolis were arrested by Sheriff Kern. Kathy Meyer of Jourdanton identified suspects from lineup photos.

The Texas Annual Conference of the Methodist Church announced reappointments for ministers across nearly 400 churches. Rev. Larry M. Stokes in Brookshire Rev. Derwood Blackwell in Katy and Rev. R.B.
