Ministers receive new assignments in local churches

Rev. D. L. Landrum Jr becomes pastor of First Methodist Brookshire replacing Rev. Larry Stokes who moves to start a church in Westbury Houston. Landrum from Joaquin arrives with Mrs. Landrum as his family relocates today. Stokes leaves with 3 acres to build a church. L. J. Walden returns to Fulshear Pattison parish. Dawson Jr moves from Katy to Port Neches Texas with his family. J Ellis McGaughy will lead First Methodist Katy. he previously served Katy about twenty years ago.

Boy Scouts Barbecue Raises About 450 Dollars

The Boy Scouts report proceeds from last Saturday's barbecue near noon totaling around 450 dollars with nearly 400 attendees. Community donations and help are acknowledged as they plan a new camp site and will publish a progress report in town. About 12 or 13 scouts will go to Camp Strake for a week beginning June 19.

J L Rose Jr Wins Tractor Driving Contest

J L Rose Jr a second year Katy FFA member won the Ford Tractor Driving contest at Port City Stock Yards earning 25 for first place. He advances to the District Contest at Columbus on Saturday June 11 with state glory possible at Houston July 19 where the top prize is a new Ford Tractor.

The Brookshire Lions Club hosted its annual barbecue last Thursday evening serving 503 people. Officials hope to net about 300 dollars for the club treasury as bills remain unpaid.

Buffs Invite Boys To Try-Out Camp

The Houston Buffs and St. Louis Cardinals announce a three day try-out camp at Busch Stadium starting Tuesday June 14 at 10 00 am for ages 17 to 23 in Greater Houston and Gulf Coast. Scouts Gus Mancuso Al Hollingsworth Dickie Kerr and Buff Manager Mike Ryba will run the event. Players pay expenses but refunds if signed to contracts. Bring shoes glove and uniform if owned. Nightwatchman shoots Brookshire disturbance suspect

Brookshire nightwatchman Dude Allison said he fired during a street disturbance after being struck and while directing a car away. Kenney Jerome Brody, a Houston area resident, was wounded in the hand arm and chest, with one bullet lodged in a vertebra. An accompanying bystander Emil Ibran was grazed by a stray bullet. Brody received care at Katy and Houston hospitals. critical condition improved after extensive surgery. Authorities tracked involved youths and a pickup tied to the incident.

Curb and Storm Sewer Plan Considered for Katy

Katy city officials, with Wyatt C Hedrick Engineers, reviewed curb gutter and storm sewer options for about 30 blocks. Estimated cost to property owners is 3.50 per running foot per side of a 32 ft street financed over five years, plus 25 cents tax to cover city expenses. Planning committee to meet again. Brookshire Lions Rally Past Wallis 9-6 in Final

In Wallis on Friday night the Brookshire Lions built a four run lead, trailed 6-6 in the sixth, then surged ahead in the seventh. Loyd Matzke walked, Flin McGhee hit a homer, James Givens walked, and John Culpepper drove him in with a triple to make it 9-6. Wallis failed to score in the last inning.

Mary Belle Woods Installed Worthy Matron of OBS Chapter

Mary Belle Woods was installed as Worthy Matron of Brookshire Chapter No. 652 Order of the Eastern Star on June 6. The ceremony listed officers including Richard Woods as Worthy Patron and Deborah Woods placing the Bible, with an informal reception afterward at Brookshire School.

John Sparkman Wins Brookshire Curb and Gutter Contract

John Sparkman received the curb and gutter contract for Brookshire with work to start in about a week. His bid was the second lowest at 1.38 per running foot. Affected streets include Otto from Fifth to Seventh, Seventh from Velasco to Farm Road 359, and Velasco from Fifth to Sixth.

Mrs Valree H Shearer was named the new Justice of the Peace for Pet. 5 by the commissioners court after G T Shearer Sr resigned in her favor. She will operate from her Pattison home handling all legal business. She is married to Grady T Shearer Jr and mother of three sons Tommy Bobbie and Billy.

The Katy Summer recreation program lists skating in the old gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 30 to 10 p m, beginner skating on Mondays and Fridays 2 00 to 4 00 p m, tennis on Wednesdays and Fridays 6 to 8 p m, with Fred Ruland Jr in charge. The robot schedule by Coach Ralph McCord includes beginner girls 10 00 to 11 30 Monday Wednesday Friday, beginner swimmers boys Tuesday Thursday 2 30 to 3 30, grades 1 6 daily 4 00 to 5 30 grades 7 12 daily, and high school adults 7 30 to 9 30 Monday Tuesday Thursday Friday.
