Memorial Lutheran Church held a cornerstone ceremony after services on August 15. The tin box contains a Bible, catechism, church roster, Lutheran Witness, treasury report, Chronicle, coins, and pictures. Construction costs are projected around 15000 dollars with Roy Peck and G M Hutsell contributing materials and labor.

Quiet Wedding in Katy Ends With Car Crash

A couple wed at Rev J K Seber's home in Katy at 10:15 p m after a loud crash interrupted the ceremony. The Beckendorffs had been blinded by an approaching car and crashed into the Seber couple's parked car injuring Mrs Beckendorff who was treated at Sealy hospital. The groom urged a wrecker to the scene and the ceremony resumed once the vows were spoken.

Mr and Mrs R E Jones were in Brenham on Friday afternoon. A nice crowd attended the Home Demonstration club picnic at the Park Sunday night.

Pattison Cemetery Cleaning Drive Seeks Donations

Part of Pattison cemetery has been sprayed with 24-D with visible results and the rest will be treated until full coverage. After clearing undergrowth the area will be burned. Local families are asked to donate five dollars to Pattison cemetery care, payable to M H Schmidt or Guy Pattison Jr, to fund the cleanup.

The fourth Thursday of the month falls on August 26. Prepare tin cans and rubbish in suitable containers placed for collection early Thursday morning.

O U Bar Ranch Home Destroyed by Fire

Mr C D Townsend and his sister Miss Norma Townsend lost their home and all household goods last Wednesday afternoon when the O U Bar Ranch house burned and was destroyed in about 30 minutes. A radio and cedar chest were saved but the belongings are not insured. Fire started on the roof near the chimney likely from a spark from the flu. Mrs 8 L Bougie of Houston visited Norma as C D Townsend vacationed in Oklahoma and both women tried to save belongings, dragging items outside before the press caught fire and burned the saved items.

Local Marine Reserve Officers Return From California Trip

Mr and Mrs Stanley Rhe man and Mr and Mrs Geo Rheman Jr spent two weeks in California visiting scenic spots. Stanley and George Jr completed a Marine Reserve training course at Camp Pendleton and returned with plans to wait the scenic spots returning home. Stanley and Mrs Rhettian returned Monday from California and Grand Canyon. 2nd Lieut Stanley Rhettian and George Jr have been promoted to captain in the Marine Reserve Corps.

Katy FFA Summer Rodeos Spark Texas Recreation Trend

The Katy FFA chapter closed its sixth summer rodeo series held last Saturday night marking a long-running program. Since starting the arena lights, the events boosted local recreation and inspired hundreds of communities to follow. Over six years 66 rodeos produced 3900 contestants with 4 accidents, a risk of 0.25 percent. Winners included Johnny Bramlow bull rider Bo Coston bronc rider Richard Beckendorff steer rider Jake Baskin men’s roper Wilton Robison boys roper Obera Morgan girls, Kenneth Bartlett under 12 and Audrey Rose under 12. Prizes from Katy Brookshire merchants complemented the awards.

Hopkins Couple Visiting Mayo Clinic in Rochester

Dr and Mrs J J Hopkins are spending two weeks at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota to learn the latest in medical science. Brookshire looks forward to welcoming these prominent visitors in their midst on September 1.

Man Describes Gray Wolf Found at His Door

Mr. M. Bennett faced high prices and taxes and found a gray wolf at his door last week. He killed the animal after his dogs bayed it and its mate was heard howling each night.

Babe Ruth Dies After Long Illness Remembered Nationwide

The sports loving nation mourns Babe Ruth who died Monday night August 16. His body lay in state at Yankee Stadium until Wednesday. Funeral was held Thursday at St Patrick's Cathedral with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Westchester NY. George Herman Ruth retired from baseball in 1985 after 76 records, 62 still standing and 708 career home runs.

Ivy's Dress Shop opens in Brookshire

Mrs. Ivy Spiller opened Ivy's Dress Shop in the Wayside Theatre building last Saturday. The store plans to stock women ready to wear dresses and other garments and will be run by Mrs. Spiller who buys stock herself. The Spillers moved to Katy Gas Plant five years ago where Mr. Spiller works as an operator and they have three sons Billy Donald and Eddie.

The Katy M Y F group calls for a clothing drive scareh hunt on Wednesday August 25 at 9 30 am meeting at the church. Participants should bring a picnic lunch and join a post hunt picnic. All young people are invited.
