The week sees rice prices fall by over 3.00 a barrel and cotton by more than 2.50 a bale. Government surpluses and bumper crops limit declines while hot dry weather accelerates cotton opening. Insects and drought threaten pecan yields as the season progresses.
At a Tuesday meeting the County Board designated Katy as the receiving school for Addicks high school. The state will pay tuition and provide transportation. The Katy Recreation Program Fund will fund coaches salaries skate purchases and other equipment. The program lasts through August.
Sidney Martin of Brookshire reports on the Lions International Convention in New York City. He will present a short talk at the next Lions Club meeting about sights and entertainments from the five day event, with later notes on convention meetings held around the clock.
The closing FFA Rodeo at the arena one mile west of Katy will be held this Saturday night, August 14. Champions in each division will win attractive prizes, with a full prize list in the FFA advertisement. Instructor L. D. Robinson praises the summer Saturday rodeos and asks the public to attend the final event tomorrow night.
Rev G Z Sadler was the evening speaker at the regular Lions Club meeting held last Wednesday. An attendance contest formed four teams with two losing sides. A barienue supper for winners is planned, and a PTA chicken dinner was served. Mrs Louis McCauley and Danny visited Houston this week.
Katy High School opens football training at the field on Monday August 16 at 7 p.m. sessions run to 9 30 with about 40 players expected 13 lettermen 15 freshmen and 12 veterans returning from last year. Skating Friday due to a soft ball game on Thursday.
The Katy Pack 209 Cub Scouts earned a five year charter as Rotary Club of Katy sponsors. Scoutmaster Kinberger received the charter from Walter Gunn at San Felipe park after a family picnic and games. Dennis McKeon earned Bear badge and Robert Red Lion badge and Gold Arrow. Next pack meeting at Camp Hudson on August 26. Boys ages 9 to 12 invited. regular meetings Wednesdays near the high school.
Mr. and Mrs J. J. Janak and their Dallas children visited Mrs. H. E. B. Romack and other relatives in Katy and Pattis on Friday and Saturday.

G. Z. Sadler Hope Cooper and Tommy Rheman going to the Sadler ranch where Hope Cooper is hurt and lacks her horse, Mrs. E. H. Martin and daughter Mary Margaret touring the Big Bend, Davis Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns and Old Mexico, with pink snakes seen in the Big Bend.
Mrs. Henry Goode and family Mrs. Roy Hammerling and family and Misa Alice Matyka of Katy enjoyed a swim and picnic Tuesday evening. Kenneth Goode was in Hempstead Tuesday on business. Dick Pabell returned home from vacation. Ed Roemack and EK W Gaydosak hosted visitors. Joe Pattison was in Houston on business.
Mrs. H. A. Reaves and Mr. Reaves came back from vacation this week. Laura Jo Walker spent the weekend at home. Mrs. Blacky McAllister and her son Don visited in the camp Monday. Mrs. R. W. Manifold and her daughter Martha from Crystal City visited Mrs. Manifold's sister, Mrs. E. B. Woodell, and Mr. Woodell in Galveston on Sunday with D. F. Woodell also present.
Mr and Mrs John R Mitcham and daughters Ethel and Mary Edith Mitcham of Katy and Billy Woodruff of Freeport were guests of G Schmidt near Wal ler. Mr and Mrs M L Adams of Katy visited in Waller Saturday. Wayne Hale of Chicago arrived home Friday and will spend his vacation with friends of Waller Rt 1. Thomas G Schmidt of Walser was a Brookshire visitor en route home after visiting Angleton and Alvin with friends.
A contract to F. L. Liberda of Wallis will extend the Wayside Theatre building 40 by 36 feet. The addition will add 168 seats and start in the coming months. Refrigerated air conditioning units have been bought for installation after completion.
The Linbeck and Dederick Construction Company of Houston was awarded the Katy high school auditorium contract after five bids. The low bid of 214,198 covers a lump sum project with 186 working days. The auditorium will mirror the junior-senior building design with a 750 seating capacity.
A petition signed by residents west of Katy Bayou and south of Highway 90 and those west of Bartlett Road requests inclusion into the City of Katy.
Four employees Graber Short Gordon Fussell Buddy Mergele and Victor Cardiff attended a three day school at Point Boliver for the American Rice Growers Cooperative Association. The program included classes in marketing financing drying and accounting along with informal fishing and socializing.
Pattison School Board orders a Budget meeting at the Old Pattison School Building on Friday night August 13 1948 to set the district budget for operating public schools in 1948 49 and to establish a tax rate not to exceed 1 25 to support the budget
C Norris notes the Dick Freeman family visited Carlsbad Caverns this week. Mr and Mrs C C Peek and family and Miss Evelyn Alston were in Galveston Sunday. Jenee Avera was guest of Jimmie Leyendecker in San Antonio this week.
District Engineer Jim Douglas outlines major road work to be submitted to the highway commission. Plans include Farm Highway 359 from Fulshear to Pattison in two counties and widening US 290 from Waller to north of Hempstead, plus bridge widening and farm to market routes with costs totaling about 5140,000 to 5160,000.
The Brookshire Branch Library notes 52 books are overdue and waiting readers ask for prompt returns. Patrons are urged to return items for community access and convenience.
The Pattison's Home Demonstration Club will hold a cake and pie sale at Shearer's Grocery in Brookshire on Saturday October 21 at 10 a.m. Proceeds support club activities and local community projects.
