First Rice Sale Opens Season at Katy Cooperative
The inaugural sale on Tuesday August 8 at the American Rice Growers Cooperative Association office in Katy saw rice arrive earlier than in prior years. Buyers included A Dennison and Sons Harold Longenbaugh H Lewis Waller Bacon and Longenbaugh Brookshire Royce Jones Schmidt and Adkins Joel Schmidt and sons Melendy Dryer. Prices ranged from 8.00 to 8.75 per barrel, about 1.25 above last year’s top. About 8900 bushels Zenith were offered and sold with fourteen mills represented.

About 500 residents from the Brookshire Katy area viewed actual combat films from the Pacific at the Katy auditorium last Friday night. The showing included technicolor segments and was sponsored by Floyd E Breedlove Post 9182 VFW to inform the public about the war in Korea. If demand exists, veterans will present more films including Silent Service The Fleet Comes to Stay Kamikaze Attacks and Peleliu Fury in the Pacific with a second screening planned in about two weeks.

Marine Warren Thompson Reported in Korea
Warren Stephen Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs S N Thompson of Addicks, serves in the 1st Marine Division and is believed to be in Korea with Marines and Infantrymen pushing west as Reds mass four divisions for a drive toward Pusan. He has about three years in the Marines and graduated high in class from Paris Island. Mrs Thompson last heard from him on July 1 while he was aboard ship.
