First Rice Sale Opens Season at Katy Cooperative

The inaugural sale on Tuesday August 8 at the American Rice Growers Cooperative Association office in Katy saw rice arrive earlier than in prior years. Buyers included A Dennison and Sons Harold Longenbaugh H Lewis Waller Bacon and Longenbaugh Brookshire Royce Jones Schmidt and Adkins Joel Schmidt and sons Melendy Dryer. Prices ranged from 8.00 to 8.75 per barrel, about 1.25 above last year’s top. About 8900 bushels Zenith were offered and sold with fourteen mills represented.

District Governor Visits Katy Rotary Club

Governor Farley S. Sanford of the 190th Rotary District visited the Katy Rotary Club on August 2 and 8. He reported on international Rotary administration trends and heard from James E. Taylor, club president, on proposed activities for the year. He gave an inspirational address emphasizing international service and peace through understanding.

Corky, a black and white Persian cat, was found last Friday evening and Sunday morning. Jim Tesar earned the reward for locating Corky after hearing the cat’s name at his barber shop. Corky had emerged from under the Katy Warehouse.

Katy Teachers Pursue Further Grad Study

Ten Katy School faculty members pursue graduate study at five colleges and universities this summer. Teachers attend University of Houston, Sam Houston State College, Southern School of Music, University of Colorado, Greeley State College, and Colorado A&M College for advanced work. Combat Films Shown For Brookshire Katy Audience

About 500 residents from the Brookshire Katy area viewed actual combat films from the Pacific at the Katy auditorium last Friday night. The showing included technicolor segments and was sponsored by Floyd E Breedlove Post 9182 VFW to inform the public about the war in Korea. If demand exists, veterans will present more films including Silent Service The Fleet Comes to Stay Kamikaze Attacks and Peleliu Fury in the Pacific with a second screening planned in about two weeks.

Marines Mobilize Brookshire Brothers for Active Duty

Captain George Rheman Jr and 1st Lieutenant Stanley Rheman sons of Mr and Mrs George Rheman Sr of Brookshire will report for active duty August 20. They have participated in annual training since the war with the First Amphibian truckers. Mrs Stanley Rheman and children Janice and Ginger will accompany their husbands to the west coast training base. Pete Harrison also called to active duty with the Marines living in San Francisco California.

Marine Warren Thompson Reported in Korea

Warren Stephen Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs S N Thompson of Addicks, serves in the 1st Marine Division and is believed to be in Korea with Marines and Infantrymen pushing west as Reds mass four divisions for a drive toward Pusan. He has about three years in the Marines and graduated high in class from Paris Island. Mrs Thompson last heard from him on July 1 while he was aboard ship.

Katy Literary Club Meets At Collins Home

The Katy Literary Club met August 8 at Mrs. Raymond Collins home with Mrs. J E Hudgens assisting. Mrs C R England presided as officers were installed for the coming year including England president Pitts vice president Poorman secretary Thompson treasurer Woods historian Hudgens parliamentarian Cardiff member at large and Collins reporter. The program on Our Neighbors to the South included material from the Good Neighbor session and a film by Pan American Airways on South America was shown.
