Bank Bandits Get Life in Culver Bank Robbery Trial

In Warsaw Indiana on May 20 a jury convicted John R Burns Arthur Silbert Peter J Fox and Joseph Byers of first degree murder for the Culver Exchange Bank robbery on December 29. The verdict carries life imprisonment after jurors split on the death penalty. The case followed a gun battle resulting in the death of J Russell Laine Culver hardware merchant. Additional local crime notes describe attempted robberies at Denham and Stonehill hardware and school building break ins with youths identified by witness IL A Sunderman and janitor W McClintock. The report also covers other property thefts and county federation club plans for Kentland meetings May 27.

Buffalo Bill Thrills Brook Folks With Wolf Chase Prank

A Wednesday countryside stunt near Brook drew farmers merchants and families into a wild hunt after two gray shapes appeared in a pasture. Armed locals including Ray Hershman and Gene Thayer set a high powered rifle and shotguns to deter presumed wolves while autos sped to the scene. Spectators watched from a distance as the gaunt animals were tracked from silo to windmill amid heat haze and dry air.

First Band Concert Marks Start Of Summer Series

The first band concert of the year will be on May 30. From the following week, concerts occur weekly on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. Conductor Meredith promises a new set and has invited Dr. Wood to assist. Brook band enjoys strong support after a local tax boost, aiding funding for the season.

Flower Girls Decoration Bay E Breagrant Procession

The procession forms at Parl Ka at 1 30 p m with Band March to the Community Building. A Bard Call to the Colors precedes the march to the Cemetery for a service by the Gun Squad. Soldiers of all wars and Sons of Veterans are asked to attend. automobiles will be provided for the old soldiers and Flower Girls. If weather is unfavorable, the meeting shifts to the Community Building at 2 p.m.

County School Commencement in Newton County

The ninth annual Newton County common school commencement will be held in the immunity building at Brook on Thursday afternoon June 2 1921 at 2 30 o clock. The program includes invocaton by Rev N V Andrews vocal solos Bandolero and My Love is a Muleteer, class address by Dr Frederick F Shannon, vocal solo As Deep on the Deep Blue Sea, saxophone sextette Lucia al Lammermoor, presentation of diplomas, and benediction by Rev J J Wiledn. Seating up to twelve hundred, admission is free. A rain event preceded other notes and local updates follow on page 5.

Mrs Walter Murfitt Dies After Prolonged Illness

Mrs Walter Murfitt passes away after months of illness. Funeral services were held at 2180 the home with Rev Dill and former pastor now of Hartford City. Burial followed in Brook Cemetery. A large crowd attended to honor her memory. She spent most of her life in the community and was active in social civic and church work. She leaves a husband and young son. Her parents Dr and Mrs Osborn of Anfiene Kangas were with her near the end. Relatives from a distance attended including Ches Murfit Leitera Ford Thos Davis Jack Davis and James Davis. The theater presents a week of programing with Garden variety films and serial episodes. Commencement Exercises Draw Large Local Crowd

A packed Community Building heard Commencement exercises as Brook Orchestra played. Superintendent Courtney introduced the speaker Prof. Tapy, who traced American life’s changes from pioneer independence to modern interdependence, noting factory work and distant continents shaped daily life. The talk explored home life’s shift, then praised community progress, with Courtney awarding parchments and Rev. Wilson delivering invocation and benediction.

Wedding announced at Shaffer home by Florence Shafer

A country house party for six teen invited guests at Mr and Mrs Grant Shaffer’s home ended with a three course dinner and games. Little Ruby Ricker announced the forthcoming wedding of hostess Florence Shaffer to Perry Whaley on Saturday May 28 at high noon. Congratulations followed the enjoyable evening. Crops Look Fine Along the Kankakee

A visitor party including John B. Lyons and J D Rich toured Bluegrans and John Wentworth farms. Crops in the area look well with corn as far advanced as in the writer’s region. wheat good, oats not as strong. Drier conditions due to a low river and dry spring, plus many acres of virgin sod being prepared for corn. Nearby activity includes heavy plowing by Jack Lawler and assorted local notices such as cabbage and tomato plants for sale and a memorial sermon at the Christian Church.
