Barry Lent and wife saw a performance of Safety First in Iroquois and urged Brook to host the same farce comedy. The strong cast promises laughs and a pleasant evening with tickets priced 20 and 35 cents, no reservations. event at the Community building Friday night.
State Director of Highways TL F Lyons returned home for Decoration Day and joined officials touring Washington for lower highway material rates. The commission secured a 20 percent discount on Nash-Quay supplies and a $185 per vehicle savings from a Leopard agent. Community notes include visits, travel, and local social events amid a busy holiday period.
The Hereford Live Stock Association covering Newton Jasper and Pulaski counties will hold a large all day picnic at Quality Stock Farm in Jasper County on June 18. An agenda will be released soon and all are invited to attend.
Decoration Day drew Brook’s largest crowd yet as crowds filled the cemetery and park. Veterans from 61 and World War II paraded, with flower girls recalling those long passed, while Governor McCray urged law changes to protect the day from sports distractions. Local citizens praised Mr. Ade and the town’s heritage, then returned to solemn ceremonies at the cemetery amid floral tributes.
Hazelden outplayed Lafayette on Sunday at Hazelden greens with forty pairs contesting eighteen holes. Final score 60 to 45 as standout match pitted Sweazee of Lafayette against Strange Lyons of Hazelden.
Brook’s baseball players secure Brunton’s field for the remainder of the season and promise improved play. The treet game on the new field will be with Walcott this Sunday as the team aims to redeem themselves after two losses and showcase their revamped setup.
The Memorial Service at the Christian Church drew seven Local Post members including M A Jones and Joseph Whiting. Dr G T Smith was absent as Tev Borkert led with Rev Wilson assisting. The sermon praised soldiers and criticized Memorial Sunday sports and games, urging legislation to curb desecration amid public praise. Mr and Mrs George Slaton were guests of Mr and Mrs Frank Staton.
Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows plan Memorial Day decoration at the cemetery. Meet at Castle Hall Sunday at 2:00 pm with cars and flowers for a joint procession. Also note a May 28 wedding at the Shaffer home for Florence Shaffer and Perry Whatou with a blue and white reception and family guests.
On last Monday a new baby boy arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rush in the north end of the county. The birth brings their total number of children to 17 with no twins or triplets. Only one member at the branch married. The missed item last week was Mrs. Sam Conn’s birthday celebration attended by all children and grandchildren with a generous spread. Those living away who attended included Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Bell and family and Don Conn of Lafayette. Mrs. Conn pleads to a record of four years, but enjoys viewing her large clan.
The weekly listing names Frank Mayo in Tiger True and The Lost City episode on Thursday, with 2 to 12 cents per ticket for kids and adults varying by day. Friday features Homespun Folks and Buster Keaton, while Saturday brings Bebe Daniels and Vivian Martin programs with varied 10 to 26 cent pricing and a midweek Village Sleuth.
Morning scene near the Lyons and Hersh stores drew workers to a dark debris pile of dirt boards bottles and wire. Witnesses noted pre prohibition bottles and lumber from 1996 building work while a mock investigation joked about bacteria and a hardware man named Commodore Lyons resisting detection.
Henry Clark stayed in the restaurant until near morning to bake, leaving small change in the drawer. When Mr. Jones opened up, the money and other items were gone. A later incident involved a peeper on Howard Street, spotted by Len Beagle who tracked the man and identified him. Authorities should act to curb the gang and protect citizens.
A large Decoration Day crowd enjoyed the park band concert with new and popular music for the season. The program pleased listeners as the band performed several airs. Ideal Club members were hosted by Mrs. Harry Brunner last Friday. Little Jean Hanson visited Mo menco to see her grandmother in the latter part of last week.
Mrs Pearl Leavitt of Brook marries Claude Graves in a May 30 ceremony at Christian parsonage Kentland conducted by Rev Koffman. Leavitt known in Brook moves to a new home with best wishes from friends. Graves is foreman at Jack Lawler ranch, a successful farmer and cattleman.
Mrs Chas Stearman's guests and Memorial Day visits mark the Brook area. Wm Hinchman and wife spent Sunday in Lafayette while Dettham and family traveled to Leeningtox. Elwood Harry spent Memorial Day in Brook with friends. Adolph Gentry family visited Gentry's mother. Stephany Meirs came from Donovan to visit Marie Arseneau on Decoration Day. Strance Lyons and Ray were among Chiewgn attendees. Sale announced for Lot 25 Lyons second addition to Brook via A L Sawyer Valparaiso Ind. Roy Mayhew and family guests of Ernest Mayhew. Al Blasey and wife visited Gus and wife. Pauline Lynns visited from Northwestern over Memorial Day. Catherine Sickafoose visited Lyons family. George Berringer of Chicago and Al Courtright's family hosted Percy Little. Elmer Cilne offers auto painting from the Novelty Building. Gov McCray and wife with Frank Comparet attended Memorial Day events from Kentland.
New office location announced in the New Bank Building with a stairway at the corner and the name above the door. Mrs Clarence Cadwallader was hospitalized Friday for an operation and is recovering. Mr and Mrs Paul Hanson visited Momence to see the family and brought home their daughter Jean who had been staying with Frisley.
