Freshman Texas lawmakers face welfare cuts and budgeting woes
About 30 new Texas legislators gathered for a two day orientation in Austin amid warnings of budgetary strain. Welfare Commissioner Hackney warned that without an emergency appropriation AFDC and medical assistance may face reductions early in 1971, with further cuts possible by June as enrollments grow.
