Hist Society Hears Of Refinery Opposition

At its fall meeting the Bristol Historical Society heard George Williams of the Narragansett Bay Homeowners Association defend positive action for regional development and oppose the Commerce Oil refinery project at Jamestown. He noted international interest and a Boston federal court appeal impacting legal history. A preface resolution urged Bristol Town Council to enact Historic Zoning principles.

Fifteen S Boats Race for Pardee Memorial Trophy

Milt Ernstoff of Providence won the Frank Pardee Memorial Trophy race, held with fifteen Herreshoff S boats sailing from Prudence Island to Bristol Harbor. The event honored Frank Pardee and supported by Mrs Alice De Wolf Pardee, with the Bristol Yacht Club housing the perpetual cup. Several boats grounded to ride current but freed themselves. finish came seconds ahead of a close rival. The prize includes a permanent award and a recent civic harmony note with Historic Zoning commissions.

Attempts To Rezone Resumed In Bristol Plans

The Bristol Planning Board and Zoning Board, aided by the RI Development Council, agree to pursue zoning revision through cooperation. Secretary Manuel Prenda distributed shared blueprints, with a joint meeting planned for October 8 to discuss state zoning regulations and a phased outline from introduction to final date. The move follows a March warning by Ralph H. Lavers that the revised zoning map was beyond repair after months of revisions to the old map and ordinance.

Bristol Teachers Reorganize and Rename BEA

At a Bristol meeting in Colt Auditorium the Bristol Teachers Association voted to rename as the Bristol Education Association. Edward P Travers, president, outlined goals of advancing professional practices, ongoing improvement, and a representative board from each school plus officers to guide year ahead. A new Ann Scanlon Memorial Library Committee of five appointed by the president will maintain the library.

Bristol Garden Club Wins Prizes At Rhode Island Show

Bristol Garden Club members win several awards in artistic and horticultural divisions at the four day Rhode Island flower show held at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet. The National Council of Garden Clubs awarded the federation a gold ribbon as the top garden club in 1968. Mrs Griswold Boynton won the artistic class for a hall table display.

Opening of Dorie Club Bowling League

The Dorie Club Bowling League opens on Thursday October 1 at 8 30 p.m. at Dudek's Bowling Lanes. It is the fifth year for the league with about eight substitutes. Members unable to attend should contact their captain or call CL 3-53880.
