Remembering Bristol Hurricane of 1938 a deadly coastal blow

A reminiscence marks the 15th anniversary of the 1938 Bristol hurricane. The storm struck after midday, with 76 mph winds and a 15 foot tidal surge. Waterfront businesses Collins and Aikman and Herreshoff reported hundreds of thousands in damage. No local fatalities, but extensive property loss and elms felled.

Massa Named Full Time YMCA Physical Director in Bristol

Edmund P Massa was appointed physical director of the Bristol YMCA succeeding Anthony E Agatiello. Massa becomes the first full time occupant as part time service expanded this year. He is a Bristol native and 1942 high school graduate with a long record in local athletics and coaching. Agatiello resigns after eight years citing time demands. directors commend his work. A new boys room will be named after Henry A Street with a formal opening planned for October.

Touch and ball program starts at the Y for boys

Massa announced a youth program with sixty boys including three players reporting for practice. He urged interested entrants to contact him at the Y or on the common where sessions are held.

Bristol Red Feather drive leaders named for 1953 campaign

Division heads for the Bristol Red Feather drive October 5 to 30 were named by Thomas D Adams Jr general chairman. State quota is 1 724 000 an increase of 10.8 percent. Bristol will be asked to raise its quota and urged to visit the mall in Providence during Red Feather Days October 4 to 7.

Kingsmen and Rangers win at Rhode Island Field Day Championship

The Kingsmen Bugle and Drum Corps defend their junior state title and place second for the championship plaque at New Bedford Massachusetts. The Bristol Rangers win the senior state championship after losing it last year. The event drew over twenty drum corps from Massachusetts Connecticut and Rhode Island with prizes awarded for drum majors snare and bass drumming and individual performances. An impromptu parade followed the prize presentation at Brooklyn Park.

Chief Leonard Leads Nomadic Coast Guard Depot Crew

Chief Boat swain's Mate Willis F. Leonard has served eighteen years in the Coast Guard and commands one of three units based in Bristol. His crew maintains aids to navigation in Bristol Harbor and nearby waters, operates a 37 foot buoy boat, handles battery recharging and refits, and assists in rescue calls and casualty duties with the Newport Group.

Big Joe Returns Home After 34 Years Away

Joseph Carreiro known as Big Joe and proprietor of the Town Tavern travels from Agua Pau in St. Michael Island to Azores to visit his ailing 83 year old mother. He flew Pan American from East Boston on August 6 for an eight hour journey and reunion.

Barrington Plant to Shut Temporarily

Barrington K 2 plant will close this week idling about 125 workers. The move by Collins and Aikman Bristol Barrington operations is due to lack of orders and is a temporary curtailment affecting mainly Warren and Barrington residents. The third shift at Bristol Barrington was dropped August 26 for slack business.
