Zephyr Diner Opens Near Frankfurt For U.S. Army

The Zephyr Diner, rebuilt from an old rail car, began serving American food to soldiers and civilians near Frankfurt in 1950. Operated by the European exchange system the 45 staff and three chefs work in shifts to offer low cost meals like soup for ten cents and full turkey dinners under a cost plus system. Eric Walling, ex New York restaurateur, oversees the project along with 50 Army snack bars and two bakeries.
