Health Department sanitation meeting to discuss program

The Town Council approved a plan by sanitarian Nicholas Mancieri to hold a public meeting on sanitation and food handling next Tuesday in Beyagids School Auditorium at 8 16 pm. Dr C Paul Bruno health officer and Southeast Health Unit director Yoseph Castronovo will join town food handlers doctors and dentists.

Building Commission Interviewing Five Architect Firms

The Building Commission began screening five architectural firms for expansion or new high school projects. The session at the high school was closed, led by Chairman Benjamin Hazen, with 17 firms originally considered and only those meeting criteria advancing. One firm will be chosen as consultant to study expansion proposals at the current site.

Supt Fitzgerald Announces Bus Changes

Superintendent Edward J. Fitzgerald said school opening eased the kindergarten problem and updated bus transportation. Fifteen children were on the waiting list but all have been removed. four remain awaiting admission after new registrations. Some joined Rockwell School, others entered Oliver School kindergarten due to vacancies.

Bids Out On Sewer Extension Project

Louis Medeiros announced bids for the year’s lone sewer extension. The plan adds ten manholes and about a 500 foot Manchester Street extension to alleviate drainage from the mistaken pitched Thompson Avenue line installed in 1947. Bids open September 23 at the main plant. $5,000 previously appropriated.

Local Eagles On Radio Show On Civic Profile Sunday

Radio Station WPRO will feature three Bristol Eagles on its Civic Profile Program this Sunday at 10 05 p m Allan Jay will monitor a twenty five minute panel discussion. Participants are Nicola Guercia Joseph Panone and Dr Raymond A Thomas. The program covers the Jobs After 49 project Home on the Range for underprivileged boys the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund 5200 9 last week to Brown University for cancer research and the Naples and Catania Houses in Italy trade schools for boys along with Muscular Dystrophy Ladies Auxiliaries and Russia’s Khrushchev visit to the United States.

Bristol Phoenix marks 122nd birthday with remarks

Wednesday commemorated the Bristol Phoenix birthday with brief remarks by Clarence Osterberg. He recalled founder W H S Bayley launching the paper on September 1837 in the De Wolf Counting House. Bayley, Green, Farrally, and Bosworth were cited among the long-running staff.

Championship To Be Held On Sunday

Pyramids Club Pilgrimage Marks Tenth Anniversary

Members and friends of the Pyramids of Charity Women’s Club depart Sunday at 12 30 p.m. for an annual pilgrimage. The bus leaves Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for a combined cultural and religious program honoring the group’s tenth anniversary. Planned is a visit to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, then a chapel service, a mystery ride, and dinner at 6 p.m. Committee includes Mrs Vasta L. Ruggiero as chairman with Mrs Rose Tortorice and Mrs Nancy Vitello, ex-officio, aided by the executive committee.

Petitions On Park Are Filed With Town Council

Two petitions signed by about 60 residents were filed with the Town Council asking park improvements at the foot of Church Street. One seeks replacement of benches in deplorable condition and the other asks Tree Warden Joseph Kinder to plant a border of shade trees. Volunteers from the neighborhood and Bristol Garden Club helped with cleanup after private industry ceased upkeep. The WPA benches at the park’s west end remain unrepaired since the 1945 hurricane.

Cutter Spar Braves Rough Seas To Service No Man's Land

Coast Guard Cutter Spar battled 40 mph gusts and heavy seas off Narragansett Bay to service buoys at No Man's Land. Lt. Norman Ensrud said crew faced spray five feet high, many seasick, before preparing for dredging near Point Judith and Block Island next week. The operation is expected to take one to three days.
