Rhode Island State Fair Attendees Lament Midway Plaisance
A 1896 Rhode Island State Fair report notes strong attendances except midweek storms. It criticizes several "men only" Midway tents as gross and insulting, while praising weathered horse races and novel contests such as the sextuplet wheel and horseless carriage events. The piece also condemns the entertainment and quotes political commentary on Bryan and Sewall. It mentions Daniel Webster’s views on currency and labor, and ends with Catherine L Beach of New York, linked to the Chicago Fair statue exhibit, facing personal troubles and Bellevue Hospital confinement after delirium.
