Ancient Norwegian Town Voss and Its Storied Name

The town of Voss in Norway lies about sixty miles from Bergen by rail and resembles the eastern Ostlandet with broad, pine woods. Voss is an ancient village with uncertain age, christened in 1028 per Snorre's Heimskringla by Olav the Saint. A famous stone church sits in the town, and near the Finneloft stands Norway’s oldest wooden building. The area is commonly called Vangen for the town and Voss for the surrounding uplands.
